An acronym for South Western Townships, Soweto was dubbed as such in 1963. The area began in the late 19th century as a temporary neighborhood for gold mine workers, then later became a black Johannesburg ghetto with forced apartheid settlement. In 1976, Soweto garnered international headlines with its deadly uprising against Afrikaans-only language education. The Mandela Family Museum and the recently restored Credo Mutwa Village (with its Zulu and Sotho homesteads) are two can't-miss sights.

Mark, was supposed to be at the airport, once our flight arrived. We arrived on time, collected our luggage, and out the gate...to nothing, no one, just us standing there. So, we waited...and waited . Then we found someone at information to call, regarding our confirmation. The driver was one. His. Way...he was only 25 minutes out! So 45 minutes later, he shows up, we were ready to board a UBER. Well, he'd been golfing, and had to rearrange his luggage compartment, where all his golf stuff was stashed., to fit our luggage. He had his clubs, extra putters and a golf bag cart. Bottom line is we paid twice as much for this service, as a Uber would have cost, and arrived at our hotel 2 hours after our arrival. So if there were no starts, this service would receive that!

Enjoy an orientation of Joburg City with a special visit to Soweto where you'll get to see the Hector Pieterson Museum. Hector Pieterson has become something of an iconic image of the fateful day, mostly due to the photograph published across the globe. Today, June 16 is the National Youth Day to honor Hector Pieterson and the then young people who fought against apartheid rule. A memorial dedicated to one of the fallen heroes not be missed.

It was our first day on holiday and we wanted to go straight to Soweto. The tour was hard as it was a lot of ups and downs on old bicycles and rough streets and paths, but it was amazing! What a great way to experience the history of this country and meet the people. People were yelling hello to us as we went by on the bikes and encouraging us as we were going back up the hills. It was an experience we will never forget! Well worth the money and time!
