As we drove into Vélez Rubio we rounded a corner and there was a beautiful sight in front of us.........tall graceful stone arches erected on a roundabout, flanked by fountains. Above the arches were the bell towers of this really large church .......topped even higher by the wonderful mountains behind it! We tracked down the church, and found it situated on the largest and most important square in the town, and it is beautiful. You don’t have to be religious to appreciate churches, I find. So many generations of local people lived out their lives whilst worshipping here, and every time I walk in through its cool, welcoming doors, I admire its simplicity. There’s something about this one.......it’s large but not overly decorated and I can sit and admire without being jostled about as it’s never busy on a normal day. Last summer, we were having coffee at one of the 3 cafes on the square when the bells started up for a long procession of beautifully dressed wedding guests who were assembling to welcome a bride, who arrived in a white carriage drawn by 6 horses! Beautiful to watch so we ordered another coffee and waited to see what would happen. The service took place whilst we had lunch, and then they all came out again, but this time it was to a traditional event........to watch a beautifully dressed caballero riding a white horse whilst it performed steps and ‘danced’ to slow, romantic flamenco music provided by a band of musicians with guitars. The horse then started to prance opposite a traditionally dressed flamenco dancer all across the square, with hundreds of guests and onlookers just loving this spectacle. It was magical! We were told afterwards that the horse and dancer were creating a dance of love, symbolising the groom and the bride. I don’t suppose we will see things like that too often! But ever since that day, this church and the square is a special place for me. I don’t know if you’ll ever see anything like that here, but I really hope that you do!

We were surprised to find it deserted on a weekday lunchtime: we had been before and visited inside the church and cloister, which was interesting and enjoyable.Having the site all to ourselves was rather amazing: the silence apart from sounds from gusts of wind made by the wind, and the breathtaking views far down the mountains was awe inspiring as was the beauty of the buildings.

Stunning church inside and out. Don’t plan a day around it, if your passing it’s worth popping in if your in Mojacar Pueblo. You will only spend 5 minutes in it. To find it from the main plaza, it’s your 3 rd right, go past the tobacco shop and you will find it on your left hand side just up the hill.

We were able to walk around the Cathedral and look at the building however to gain entry there was a fee. It is located in the city of Almeria surrounded by tall palm trees.
