A convenient and friendly church if you are traveling in the D.C. area. We have an 8:15 am casual/contemporary service and a 10:30 traditional service.

Founded in 1795, the Basilica of Saint Mary, located in Alexandria, Virginia, is the first Catholic parish in the Commonwealth of Virginia and West Virginia, which were one state up until 1863. President George Washington made the first contribution in the late 1700s, equivalent to approximately $1,200 today. In 1810, the parish moved to its present location in the heart of the city at 310 South Royal Street. By 1826, Pastor Fr. Joseph Fairclough erected the Sanctuary and the major portion of the present-day Basilica, which was formally dedicated in 1827. Throughout the 1800s, the Basilica of Saint Mary played a crucial role in the growth of Catholicism in Virginia. Many mission churches that the Basilica of Saint Mary established have gone on to become independent parishes within the Diocese of Arlington.
St. Mary’s Basilica is the oldest Catholic Church in Virginia/West Virginia. Very active parish with 7 masses on the weekend and 3 daily masses. If you are not a practicing Catholic, it’s still a beautiful place to visit for the incredible stained glass windows and traditional architecture.

Visited this church while traveling through the area and it was absolutely wonderful. The church design was beautiful and the congregation was welcoming. The sermon which the priest gave made the reflect on your life and gave you something to think about during the week. The Mass I attended had the hand bells and it was absolutely something you should witness. I do not know the schedule when the hand bells are used but if you can make the time to attend one of those services you will not be disappointed.

@ecdurant The priest sits during communion because he had a traumatic brain injury and giving communion causes vertigo and he would pass out. Or course, it's easy to judge and ask someone who is unfamiliar, rather than ask one of the parishioners AT the church. This wonderful church feeds the hungry, clothes the poor, and does wonderful things for its community and in the DC metro area, which is in keeping with Matthew 25, its mission. Devout Catholics aren't supposed to judge others; I guess that lesson sometimes gets forgotten...
