Fantastic place with wildlife outside your tent, excellent food and open heart

Reviewed By Brutus Ö

Beautifully situated by the riverside of Zambezi. And when you glance over the river, it's Zambia you are looking at. Here you'll have the nature and the fauna literally within a few feet from the dinner table. And we are speaking of the mega fauna, elephants, hippos, walking outside your tent. My first visit at the Mwinilunga camp was in October 2016, together with a south african friend who had persuaded me to go to Mana Pools and was eager that we should go to Dave and Tess' camp. Since that I have gone myself and brought four groups with photographers to the camp. Mana Pools is a fantasticly beautiful NP, and what makes the Mwinilunga camp so special are simply the owners, who also personally help in serving the guests very early coffe and porridge plus big-hearted brunch and in the evening delicious dinner. The food is excellent, it's hard to believe that you are getting such high class cooking in the bush and in a country where it's a never-ending struggle to get the right raw products, if any raw material at all. The secret behind the fantastic cooking is Tess, before starting the camp she ran a reputed catering firm in Harare. You can immediately feel that Dave and Tess love the wilderness that characterizes the Zambezi river and the national park. But Dave and Tess don't only love the environment and the amazing wildlife, they are truly lovers of their fellow humans. I know no other camp in Africa or elsewhere where I can find the same warmth and open heart.

Unforgettable Stay in Gwango!

We spent three marvellous days in Gwango Heritage Resort! The location of the Camp is very close to the national park gates, the room was verly clean, nicely furnished and had a nice big bathroom. Also, there is a lovely and clean pool area, which was nice to use to cool down. We booked a three day Safari Package, which included two safari trips into the National Park and two shorter safari drives around the property. We were very happy with our guide, since he was well educated and considerate, and told us a lot of interesting facts! The price was very reasonable, since food was also included. The food was veeery tasty, with a lot of variety and big portions! The staff in general was very polite and attentive. We would loove to come back here!

Out in the African bush - with all facilities

Reviewed By David H

Our UK travel agent, Audley Travel, had arranged our trip to Zimbabwe recommending The Hide as the last stay of the trip. This had more investment than other places we stayed which meant some better facilities such as newer vehicles, a more extensive central area and more management around. The tents were similar to others and the housekeeping kept them clean and tidy. There were more wildlife around the site with the chance of meeting the local elephant and an impala or baboons on the way to and from tents and the requirement for an armed guide to escort guests at night. The large lake out front was attractive to the wildlife morning and evening and there’s a hide close to the favourite elephant drinking point. There’s a small swimming pool we used to the amusement of the locals but daytime temperatures in the mid to upper twenties aren’t to be missed. But the main activity is the game drives morning, afternoon, evening and night as required. Our guide Nkosi was particularly well-informed and knowledgeable about the area and tapped into the local network to find what was required. Even an off-the-cuff idea wasn’t forgotten and produced results a couple of drives later. My lady wanted to see a Secretary Bird and after a bit of searching he produced one that caught and ate a small snake in front of us. Reports of lions involved a longish drive to another area but there was a pride on a hill including a maned male. Nkosi got us close and then when the male moved he circled round and got us into position to see the animal walk towards us over a rise – and then slump down right beside us and go to sleep! The highlight of the visit for Nkosi was discovering a Brown Hyena that he hadn’t seen in the area ever before. That really pleased him. We had a night in the Dove’s Nest but the cold nights – this is the last week of May - killed the idea of sitting on the deck in the moonlight watching animals. Woken early by the baboon calls we watched the plain come to life while well-wrapped in blankets. A herd of wildebeest, nine giraffes in a decorous line plus zebra and a jackal. But we were glad to get back for a hot breakfast. Food and drinks came regularly and often and by this time we realised that three meals a day and snacks plus sitting in a vehicle much of the time wasn’t doing the waistline much good but enquiries about a walking safari weren’t successful. And then it was time to go and now, on a drizzly Sunday morning in UK, it all seems a long way away.

Wilderness Continues to Provide Premier Experiences in Hwange!

We cannot thank you enough! Linkwasha exceeded our expectations, in part due to the excellent staff and guiding. Liberty the manager was with us at Little Mak in 2019. He manages Linkwasha now and with his team, make this a wonderful camp. Paolo and Nikki were great assistant managers. Our guide from the airport, Livingston, found the wild dogs 45 minutes after we landed – a pack of four which were beautiful! Eustace, our guide on safari drives, always looked out for us and ensured that we had a fantastic experience. Except for the first day of drives, Eustace was our private guide for our stay at camp! He taught us great sundown photography tips and ensured that we knew how to use them. We visited the hide in Linkwasha, Little Mak, and Davidson and have fantastic elephant photos! Eustace was relentless in finding us great experiences and photo opportunities. It would be wonderful to work with him again someday. Staff member Patrick also is noted as exceptional, as he repaired my hiking boot when the sole dislodged – how he could sew the shoe and sole back together is a wonder to me! Keep up the good work and our thanks for making our 15th African safari a wonderful and exciting experience.

Wonderful classic African safari camp

Reviewed By faplp

Camp Mana is a wonderful, small-scale classic African safari experience, of the kind I have dreamed about for many years. Comfortable tents, all with lovely views of the open Zambezi river plain and the mountains across it in Zambia. Grazing elephants, hippos and antelopes right on your doorstep, and we had a male lion roaring in camp on our first night. A lovely communal dining & seating area under a huge open canvas top brings guests together to share the day’s experiences. Steve Bolnick, the owner, is a fun and very knowledgeable guide to both flora and fauna in Africa, and he manages the camp with excellent attention to detail to ensure all the guests are happy. The camp is a solar-powered minimum-impact setup, and is dismantled entirely for four months every year, allowing the site to return to a pristine natural state. We loved Camp Mana and will be back as soon as possible!

Kapula Private Camp

Kapula is a game viewing paradise during the dry season where guests can see vast herds of elephant and buffalo in addition to plain game, and hear the lions roar at night. The Kapula concession consists of two camps: North Camp with four 2-bed luxury safari tents on raised wooden decks with en-suite bathrooms and additional outside showers, self-catering; and South Camp with four 2-bed safari tents, on concrete slabs on the ground with en-suite bathrooms, self-catering. We prefer to keep the camps small and intimate. There is no 24 hour standby electricity at Kapula and all rooms’ electrical requirements are solar-generated. Guests are therefore not able to use hairdryers, kettles etc. in the rooms. The communal main building does have facilities for charging camera batteries, cell phone batteries etc. Both camps have a kitchen equipped with all the necessities.

Lying in bed at night being serenaded by various Owl species was very special.

Reviewed By N4776MLchriss

Looking to overnight in the middle of HNP Kapula was recommended to us by Ashley Brookstein who assured us we would love the place. A long journey from Harare finally ended as we drove into camp looking for Tent #3 which we found by following signs. WE had no sooner stopped and William presented himself. "I am William the Camp Attendant" he told us and immediately set about helping us settle in. Our tent was well appointed with a comfortable double bed covered with a big mosquito net. Bathroom and shower were very nice and welcome after our journey. Hot water came from a Donkey Boiler. William then showed us around and we were able to put our perishables into a camp fridge/freezer sited in a Communal kitchen. We made ourselves some tea on the provided gas stove and repaired to the Balcony area overlooking a small borehole fed pan. What a spot. The incessant drumming of wheels on roads and growly engine noises soon drifted away into an unhappy memory as we allowed ourselves to relax and to soak up the quiet while waiting for something to happen in front of us. Were were the only people in camp for awhile and it made relaxing so much easier. When the other campers arrived we hardly noticed them as the facilities are tastefully spread out. Elephant, Guinea fowl, Coucals were amongst the wildlife that came to drink s the sun set behind us. Sandgrouse with their signature call came scooting in just above the trees for a drink too as darkness fell. Our dinner was an easy affair with all cooking facilities available at the kitchen. We shared the evening meal with our neighbours. Like many campfire acquaintances we struck a friendly conversation with them - so easy in such a welcoming atmosphere. We ended the evening sitting on the deck again while listening to the varied and exciting bush sounds. No Lion or Hyena this night, rather a soliloquy provided by several Barred Owls who must have been courting. Our very comfortable bed had us fast asleep soon after lights out. We did have little fans near our heads should we have felt in necessary to cool down, but we were lucky and it wasn't too hot. Solar power means no generators and a silence of perfect quality. Ah, man, I just wish I could go back to just to experience that absolute quiet!

Zambezi Sands River Camp

This tented lodge is situated within the western area of the Zambezi National Park on the banks of the mighty Zambezi River upstream of the Victoria Falls. Paradise on the banks of the Zambezi River

Reviewed By David H

We spent four nights here relaxing at the end of a 3 week driving tour through Namibia and Botswana. The arrangements to pick us up at our Victoria Falls Hotel and drop us at the VF airport worked flawlessly and our hosts at the river camp were amazing. We did river boat and kayak drifting on the Zambezi River and game drives through the Zambezi Park. Our tented accomodations were spacious and luxurious with a pair of Giant Kingfishers spending much of the day fishing from a tree limb just off our balcony as vervet monkeys played in the trees. The afternoon drives and "Sundowner" stops to end the day were special, particularly when watching a herd of elephant come to the river for an evening drink. This resort is in the Zambezi Park and had its locals like George, the warthog who grazed on the lawns. Security is great with an escort for trips to the dining room and back after dark. The chef turned out delicious meals served on the patio overlooking the Zambezi. Choose the correct season if your interest is in big game (dry season is best) but ours was primarily the birds so March was perfect.
