10 Campgrounds in Morocco: Best hotel deals for 2023

May 2, 2023 Giuseppe Pratt

The fragrant air of Morocco seems spiked with local spices. Cradled by the dunes of the Sahara, the Kingdom has been inhabited for hundreds of thousands of years. And from the bustling Medina of Marrakech to the mosaic of leather tanning vessels in Fes, Moroccan culture is still steeped in rich tradition. The collection of blue-bottomed boats in Essaouira has become a monochromatic hallmark of the city, while the cafés of Casablanca will invoke your inner Bogie or Bergman.

Incredible family experience at Sahara Sky Luxury Camp

Reviewed By HansenFamAdventures

Sahara Sky Luxury Camp was EXACTLY the Sahara glamping experience we dreamed of. We booked 2 nights and I'm so glad we did. The first evening we arrived after a long day of driving and our kids (5 & 7.5) were exhausted. So we took a 4WD truck ride to the camp and they fell asleep immediately after dinner (missing the fire & music). By staying a second night our kids were able to be refreshed for the next day's camel rides & evening entertainment. The camp hosts go above & beyond to make a magical experience for their guests. The camp is gorgeous, with lanterns & rugs making the paths and lots of intimate seating areas. All meals were delicious, beautiful presentation, and more food than anyone could eat in a sitting. The evening music & dancing was so fun, and again the hosts are so attentive to every detail - I brought my own bottle of wine to the fire pit and they setup a table, wine glasses & a lantern for me. The second night we were the only guests at the camp, but the hosts still lit the fire pit and played music just for my kids. They let my kids play the instruments, and picked them up to dance. It was a memory we'll cherish forever.

Magical experience in the desert

Reviewed By Michbos

My daughter and I visited the camp at the end of our trip and it was definitely the highlight of our time in Morocco. The guided camel ride, food, stargazing, music, and private tent left us in awe. Yet, the best part was the staff who welcomed us as family and are the most genuine, kind people you will encounter. There aren’t enough nice words to do justice to how great this place was, most definitely recommend.

A Night to Remember

Reviewed By nelaskaris

Just amazing! This is a “must” experience if you want to enjoy the Merzouga desert at its fullest. The people are most welcoming and they make you fell like home. To get there you can ride a camel (approx. 1h) or via 4x4 car. Upon arrival you get to drink Berber tea at the wonderful gazebo with poufs and hammocks. The tents are quite big, clean, with a proper toilet and shower. They also provide some local clothing for the night where the temperature is quite lower. We had a very comfortable stay. Diner was one of the best we had in our entire trip. Almost all products come from their garden and they use very old traditional Berber recipes (which included their own pizza and meatballs). After diner, all guests gathered around the fire where the hosts sang and played the drums. There was some dancing involved too, which made the experience absolutely unique - we were singing and dancing around the fire in the Sahara desert! Next day we woke briefly at 4am to see the stars and the Milky Way galaxy as you have never seen it before. We then woke up again at 5:45 to enjoy the sunrise from the high dunes. After that, we enjoyed another special breakfast and then left. We wished we could stay there for another night. It is a family-owned business and you can tell they have poured their heart into it. They are the friendliest and kindest people you will meet. We 100% recommend it to anyone.

I went to the camp yesterday with my family.. and all I can say is it was amazing!! They are so lovely and very welcoming! I have loved every second spent with them, from the camel rides to the bone fire under the beautiful stars of Merzouga! I recommend it 100%. The tents are very clean, luxurious and the natives are the kindest people I’ve ever met. I also recommend to ask for Saïd, when it comes to the camel rides. He is so kind hearted, you’ll love your trip on the way to the camp.

Exceptional desert experience

Reviewed By ABouargalne

After exploring all the options, we are glad that finally we chose Tassili Luxury Desert Camp for our stay over other desert camps near Merzouga, as the overall experience has been EXCEPTIONAL. The team at the Tassili Camp are superb and they have taken best care of us from the moment we’ve arrived until we sadly had to leave. The tents are huge and clean and the bed was very comfortable. Due to the power backup, there is always electricity and availability of hot water. We were greeter with Moroccan tea and cookies on our arrival and food options for breakfast and dinners were varied and great. All the dishes were pretty delicious and well cooked. Every evening cultural program offered authentic experience around the fireplace with music which was fantastic. On our second day we have decided to do a desert tour. Our guide Hassan was very knowledgeable, attentive, fun and provided us with the most fantastic tour around the area. It was way better than we expected! They also offer camel rides at sunrise and sunset. Watching sunset on the dunes was just magical! I would really like to thank everyone at Tassili Luxury Desert Camp for creating great memories for us and we cannot wait to come back. I would highly recommend the camp to anyone looking for an exceptional, superb, deluxe desert experience in Morocco!

Terre Des Etoiles

Such was the origin of the Agafay desert oasis project : to render to the ground the strength it communicates to me and create an oasis. What a gigantic project to consider greening the desert, surveying nearly 5 hectares of lunar land to cultivate, sow, plant, water and finally create harmony and life. This requires us to work permaculture as already initiated. You are welcome to pay a simple visit or to help in the garden ! The project is a place of co-creation and sharing on this Moroccan ground for the entire human and natural species. This project, I wanted it. Overall, with the whole team that maintain it alive, I strongly intend to share it with you. Each of the 30m² tents has its own bathroom and toilets with Tadelakt, a very comfortable bed, decorated in a moroccan style with Hotel standards requirements.

Could be spectacular…

Reviewed By NatalieL848

I would love to give Terre Des Etoiles 5 stars but unfortunately I didn’t have an amazing experience. And I love the eco part of the camp. To start out with the positives I had been emailing Dina for a few months as my original stay was cancelled due to the lockdown in Morocco. They were really friendly and helpful over email correspondence and assisted me with transfers etc. On arrival I had a warm welcome and was shown to my tent (explorer). I’m not a camping person but this seemed sufficient for one night although there was no hot water any my lamps/electric didn’t work. Lunch at the camp was super expensive (£35) and there was no option for a La carte. I only fancied a snack/salad so didn’t make the best use of the buffet. However, there were a lot of options and all freshly prepared, the chef was also a delight, so if you come here for lunch come with an empty stomach! The staff were amazingly attentive to the point they’d rush over if I tried to pour water for myself. Dinner was fine. Only one option for both starter, main and dessert, but my sever did accommodate my request for a veggie main. Once again, the staff at the bar were amazing and friendly. My main issue was with the male receptionist who thought it was fine to try and proposition me for sex when I was enjoying a fire outside my tent after midnight. I gave him the brush off but he kept persisting for a long time which is not fine. I don’t mind a chancer but the sleaziness and persistence was not ok. Especially as I was the only person that night staying in my camp section. It was so uncomfortable that I wanted to leave that night but there was no where to go (or a lock on a door!). All I wanted was a chilled night enjoying the stars with a wine and a book, but he ruined this. Not cool. I did not feel safe and I do not say this lightly. I did mention this on check out the next morning but there was no response or follow up. It was a great experience until then. So, I would recommend this camp to groups and couples but not solo female travellers which is an absolute shame as it is a spectacular place with amazing staff (par one!).

Ali & Sara's Desert Palace

We created Ali & Sara's Desert Palace with the aim that our guests could experience the beautiful and natural setting of the desert, staying in clean & comfortable surroundings where the focus is relaxation and enjoyment, together with some safe adventure. Nestled well within the dunes, we're about an hour or so from Merzouga village by camel and 20-30 mins by 4x4. If preferred we can collect clients from around Morocco or if travelling independently we can greet you on your arrival in Merzouga village for you to enjoy light refreshments before setting off by the desert ship, the camel to your home for the night. Our aim is to remain as environmentally friendly as possible and lighting is by a combination of candle and solar power. We pump water from our own water well and guests can take hot water showers, with laundered towels and toiletries provided in a large dedicated bathroom which also houses a separate flush toilet. Dining is in under the stars or in our separate well furnished restaurant and food is freshly prepared to suit personal preference, served at a time to suit. We wake our guests to see sunrise although it's not obligatory and breakfast is served at a time to suit, there's no early morning rush or hurry on our part for our guests to depart. Our aim is for guests to have an exceptional and complete desert experience, we take great care of our clients and we pride ourselves on our service, always on hand, but unobtrusive.

Not to be missed!

We had such a wonderful and unique experience at Ali and Sara’s. Booking and communicating with Sara was smooth and responsive. Mohamed, our host could not have been more attentive, often anticipating our needs and patiently answering all of our hundreds of questions about the camp and Morocco in general. Ahmad, our guide into the desert was friendly and engaging with excellent English. He even gave us mini lessons in Berber as we watched the sunrise and sunset over the Sahara. This rates high on my list of travel experiences and I highly recommend you do an desert excursion and stay at Ali and Sara’s if you get the chance. It will not disappoint!
