During this tour, you can expect quite the variation in the types of flora and fauna, such as small palm trees and meter-tall trees filled with orchids, but also various animals like colorful birds, snakes, monkeys, frogs and pigs. The greatest treasures of the Brown Mountain are the different natural waterfalls on the mountain, where you can take a shower. The route from Paramaribo to Brownsberg is approximately 110 kilometers. During the trip we pass through various local villages, where mostly Maroons live. The road to the top of Brownsberg will be climbed with a pickup or van. Once we once arrive at the top, we wait for a beautiful view over the lake. In the evening you will be able to enjoy a boat ride, swim, or fish for toekoenari (bass species) and piranhas . If you want to do something a little quieter, you can relax in the hammock. This tour is highly-recommended for nature lovers.

We took a taxi($3) 3.5 km north from our Downtown Oasis Guesthouse to the Saoena Zondagmarkt. This large Indonesian Market is 150 m from the 'Sanya Budaya' Cultural Center where the tall 1990 Javanese Immigration Monument celebrates 100 years since the 33,000 contract workers came from Java in 1890. This weekly gathering is a festival for the descendants, a flea market, has produce, ready to eat food, music, a bit of everything. Family friendly and enjoyable.

We booked a tour to Bigi Pan (Stephanie's Lodge) and small SUV rental via Orange Travel. Communication was quick and accurate. Payment can be made to a Dutch bank account which is handy for Dutch travellers and avoids money transfer fees. The car rental was executed by Dcars in the Frederik Derbystraat. We found this out fairly late and it was a bit far from our hotel, in hindsight it would have been better to know this earlier. Orange Travel obsessed a lot about the car return on early Sunday morning when we were coming from Groningen - we would have to do this at an hotel with a 24x7 reception. In practice however Dcars allowed us to park the car at their premises and drop the key in a box. Knowing this in advance would have saved us a small concern. Otherwise, the trip to Bigi Pan went as expected (fabulous) and the small SUV we rented, a Pajero, was very old but in quite good shape and served us well. Overall we can recommend Orange Travel.

We drive in the neighborhood of Jodensavanne past 2 small indigenous villages and see how the locals live. The bus ride is continued to a seaside resort nearby. This is a recreational resort near the village of Redi-Doti. A creek with cool water, full of minerals and has obtained the dark color because of the leaves. You can take a walk in the area, spot various birds or just enjoy the peace and nature.

By bus or minibus we will arrive on Brownsberg. This is a nature reserve park located in the Brokopondo district, about 130 kilometers south of Paramaribo. The nature reserve park covers more than 12,000 hectares and is home to exceptional flora and fauna. There are various medicinal plants that are traditionally used for injuries or illnesses. You will encounter most animals at sunrise and sunset. The howler monkeys usually make themselves heard and maybe a wild deer or Pakira (forest pig) is spotted. High in the treetops you will find hundreds of different species of tropical birds. At the Mazaroni plateau you have a magnificent view of the reservoir that was created by man to place the Afobaka dam in the Suriname river. The area of the lake was inhabited before the dam was built. Most people have moved to the so-called transmigration villages in Brokopondo and other areas in the Upper Suriname area. Remnants of tree trunks are still visible in the lake, creating a unique image.

From the bicycle rental company, you cycle to the Plattebrug where you will board a wooden tent boat to Meerzorg. From Meerzorg you will cycle via the Oost - West verbinding to Peperpot. This plantation was laid out by the Jansen family in the early 19th century as a coffee and cocoa plantation. There are two plantation homes on the factory complex, a coffee shed and a coffee and cacao factory. The production continued until 1996. There is also a kampong (settlement) with workers' houses inhabited by Javanese people, although people have found work elsewhere. You can still recognize the coffee and cacao trees, which are nowadays covered with bromeliads, orchids and climbing plants and the animals have reclaimed the area. Peperpot is popular for bird lovers, but if you are lucky, you can also encounter squirrel monkeys, capuchin monkeys and sapakaras (giant lizards) on one of the paths that have been laid right through the plantation.
