Skulpturenpark Waldfrieden

The Waldfrieden Sculpture Park is located on a wooded slope between the center of Wuppertal in Elberfeld and the district of Barmen. The sculptor Tony Cragg opened the park in 2008 as a location where contemporary sculpture could be encountered in the open. It extends more than 14 hectares around the Villa Waldfrieden which the paint manufacturer Kurt Herberts commissioned to be built between 1947 and 1950. This singular building, which owes its sculptural qualities to its designer the artist-architect Franz Krause, was constructed in an organic manner and is encircled by a terraced lawn which merges subtly into its surroundings. Thanks to the regularely changing exhibitions of wellknown sculptors and a demanding event program, visiting the sculpture park is worthwile during the whole year.

Had a wonderful visit here. A beautiful spot on the side of a hill, it was a real pleasure to wander along the wooded paths taking in the stunning sculptures. The views are great too. The park was the brainchild of British sculptor Tony Cragg who lives in Wuppertal - his work is dotted around the site and throughout the town too. A special mention for our tour guide Max who explained the thinking behind Cragg's work and the history of the park. His English was superb and he made it a day to remember. Highly recommended!
