10 Budget-friendly Things to do in Skiathos That You Shouldn't Miss

June 9, 2021 Dorsey Hagwood

Tiny Skiathos is packed with pine forests, archaeological ruins, and—most importantly—beaches. Shed your inhibitions at the nudist Banana Beach or have a more modest sun session at Koukounaries, which is peppered with lively cafes. Sail around on a chartered catamaran, hike to the dramatic medieval ruins of Kastro and tap into your spiritual side at one of Skiathos many monasteries.

This is a must see in Skiathos. Amazing collection of personal family effects over 5 generations and the family have done a fantastic job in turning their ancestral home into a living museum. A really lovely family, and great value for money at €2 entry.

Bourtzi Beach

We make a point to visit this area ( through the back streets overlooking the old port ( keep the sea on your left all the time and you will find the area.) not the beach but the rocks that jute out and you see Skiathos port from a different angle as well as beautiful view of the sea and other beaches along the coast .. We also jump in and have a swim more often with the locals/ children who seem to enjoy jumping off the rocks. The beach is very small and not really well kept as the Taverna at the bottom is derelict. A lovely walk back down other back streets

Mandraki Beach

Reviewed By saronic - Zurich, Switzerland

Our favourite beach, when on Skiathos, was the one at Mandraki. For it we took the bus to Koukounaries village, but got off at a stop called 'Mandraki Beach' just before the final stop at Koukounaries Beach. The bus leaves Skiathos town every 15 minutes and with many stops in between the whole trip takes about 40 minutes. Once off the bus we started a wonderful walk through a forest of umbrella pines, which are not very common in Greece, where forested coastal areas mainly consist of the nice smelling, but a bit less impressive Aleppo pine. There is a path for hikers, while drivers with a car or a bike will use a small unsurfaced road towards Mandraki with its limited parking space. Not too many people are usually found on this forest path, where one can observe various plants like strawberry trees, rock roses, heather, mastix, smilax or a not very common Daphne gnidioides with white flowers and red berries at the same time in September. Mandraki Beach has golden sand, which continues in the sea, making it easy to get into the water. In this respect just like Koukounaries Beach, but without the razzmatazz around it. There are stalls selling drinks and snacks and parts of Mandraki are covered with sunbeds and umbrellas, but there is also an area, where one can enjoy the beach without using these comforts. Walking the same way back we then loved to walk along the lagoon of Koukounaries with its interesting flora and birdlife to the final bus stop by the beach with a bigger chance to find a seat on the often crowded bus to Skiathos town.

Amazingly beautiful beach with seating on the pebbles or on the grass of the taverna property. We arrived as the sun was starting to set and ordered a delicious range of dishes that included grilled shrimp, fresh tuna, calamari and sea urchins. Every dish was delicious and we somehow found space for orange pie! I can't wait to return another year.

monastero di Panagia Evangelistria

I visited the monastery on a very wet September day. The road to it, which terminates at the monastery was surfaced, but was of very poor quality in places. The attractive church is surrounded by other buildings including a library, chapel and museum. Highlights for me included the vast bread oven downstairs in the museum, the row of large glass vessels containing fruit liquors and the many friendly cats. The museum would be improved if there were descriptions in english - it contained many documents and photos sbout the Greek War of Independence and religious regalia. The view down to the sea from the carpark would have been magnificent on a sunny day.

Great and unique spot. Easy to get to with a car from Koukounaries and Mandraki beach; the road is in good condition when coming from Mandraki, while after you park your car need to walk a bit, down to the beach. The small taverna has everything you need for a day at the beach. Enjoy this beach and lets keep its unique charm!
