Two routes available. An elevated footpath takes the visitor on a 1.6km out-and-back walk to Lake Ichiko. It is free and no special footwear is required. The route provides stunning views of the Shiretoko mountain range. Electric fences surround the walkway, to keep the bears away The second route of 3km round trip starts on the ground and joins the elevated walkway towards the end. Entry fee costs 5000 yen from 10 May to 31 July, but drops to only 250 yen from 1 August to 20 October. Visitors are required to register and attend a 10-minute briefing on safety precautions, including action to take in the event of a bear encounter. Ground conditions are classified on a scale of 1 to 3, with 3 being muddy and gum boots required, but gum boots are still highly recommended for condition 2. You’ll need to plan in advance, as the gum boots can only be hired for 500 yen at the Shiretoko Nature Centre, which is located 9km away before you get to Shiretoko Five Lakes. Parking at 500 yen per car, and toilets available. Pleasant walk through nature with lovely views of the lakes and mountain ranges. Best to go on a sunny day, as rain will obscure the view of the surrounding mountains.

Kumanoyu is a secret hot spring made in the forest of a riverbank of the Rausu River, managed by local lovers. Because of the good quality and heat of hot water, Kumanoyu is popular among local fishermen as well. ●Hot spring water quality: Sulfer-containing, sodium, chloride spring (hydrogen sulfide system) ●Available Period: Whole year (not available between 5-7am due to the cleaning) ●Having dressing room ●Separate bath for men and women
I first went to Kumanoyu in February 1989 and again in September of 2017. It is a wonderful hot spring that is taken care of by citizens of Rausu. Admission is free. There is a separate women’s area that is completely enclosed, and another spring that can be used by anyone, but is usually full of men. The bath is rather hot for me, and seemed to be about 45 degrees both times I went. It is on the Shiretoko Highway just after the Rausu Visitors Center where a bridge goes over the river. There is parking for a few cars and an English-language sign by the bridge. Cross the bridge and walk about 50 meters. This is my favorite hot spring in the Shiretoko area. The Rausu folks are talkative and the scenery is beautiful, with red maples in the fall and lots of snow in the winter. Visited 9/23/2017.

Just off the main road to Shiretoko really worth a visit. There is even car parking spaces next to it so it's a breeze to stop by.

All the waterfalls which I have visited in Japan is not allowing anyone to go inside. But this waterfalls is different from all. You can reach this place by taking direct bus from Shari station or 30 minutes bus from Shari goko area. This is hot waterfalls where you can enjoy light hiking train within falls or you can take bath here. Quite unique view from this fall. you can only climb upto 100 meter upwards but still a must visiting place in Shari area. Do mind bus timings and bear.

Lucky me, it could be so beautiful from the visitor centre! But go earlier! I took the 12:30pm bus and started the walk and I nearly had to run back as the last bus was 2pm back to town! It’s at least 30 min one way on the snow and more if you take lots of photos!

Shiretoko National Park Nature Center is located at the entrance of the Shiretoko National Park, Hokkaido, Japan. It not only serves as an information center for the park visitors but also facilitates your enjoyable stay in Shiretoko.
This is a well functioning center, with helpful staff some of which speak English very well and can provide you with a lot of useful information about the natural reserve. There is a good cafe in the Center and they serve one of the best latte’s I have had in Hokkaido. They are made with great care. The food is very decent too at moderate prices and there are options for most peoples taste I would think.
