10 Budget-friendly Things to do in Petoskey That You Shouldn't Miss

October 29, 2021 Leonarda Pillsbury

Petoskey, sitting on the shores of Lake Michigan, has been a popular vacation spot for decades. Earnest Hemingway spent the first 18 summers of his life sailing and fishing on nearby Walloon Lake, and the area features prominently in several of his stories. The Little Traverse History Museum shows how the Petoskey area was a formative influence on young Hemingway. The area is also a well known winter destination, with three popular ski resorts featuring everything from dog sled rides to tubing.

We parked in Sunset Park in Petoskey and headed to Harbor Springs. In order to avoid the airport and the noise of busy roads, turn down Beach Road and follow this quiet road all the way to the delightful town of Harbor Springs. You will pass lovely homes and waterfront views. There are many eateries to choose from in Harbor Springs before you head back to your starting point.

Pirates Cove Adventure Golf

I loved coming here on my birthday. My boyfriend and I had spent time in Mackinac City and were on our way back home to Traverse City. We love Petoskey so before picking up our Indian food at a restaurant across the highway we decided to play putt putt golf at Pirates Cove Adventure Golf. What a blast. The staff welcomed us and handed us a Captain's Course card. We didn't bother keeping score. It was so much fun to just enjoy the game in the moment. The course is easy to navigate and there's some challenging golf holes.. Lots of trees and quaint waterways and falls add to the charm. I can't wait to go back someday again. If you want to brush up on your golfing this little gem on Highway 31 in Petoskey will win you over.

The four of us had a pleasant afternoon outside sampling our cider flights. It wasn't busy so we could take our time studying the board and carefully choosing our pours. My favorite was the Apple Blueberry. It was a perfect outing for a fall day. Next time, I will bring some snacks to share.

Searching for Petoskey Stones, walking out to the light house, watching the fishing boats, yachts, and sailboats, catching a baseball or softball game, browsing the history museum, relaxing on the large grass park lawn, walking the dog, so many things to do at this park near the marina. There is plenty of parking and you can walk under the road and up to the GasLight District of Petoskey.

Situated on the East end of Little Traverse bay, the Petoskey State Park is one of the most amazing beachfront areas in the Great Lakes. It's like a smaller version of Holland State Park. Miles of sandy beach, amazing water, a really nice concession stand, the ability to bring your own picnic and beverages - just wow. We visit at least a few times a summer to "get away" from it all because it is so relaxing. Highly recommend! 5 stars

My Husband and I were taking another couple on a Northern Michigan Tour and stopped at one of our favorite places: Kilwins in Petoskey. We shopped and had ice cream. Later I realized I had lost a necklace given to me as a gift. We backtracked the places we visited including Kilwins. We didn’t find the lost jewelry. Leaving our name and number. We headed home feeling the loss. The next day we received a call that Kilwins Manager, Scott found the necklace in the parking lot. He mailed it to our home. We received the package the next day and Scott even included some chocolate to sweeten the recover. A big thanks to Scott and Kilwins Staff. Your thoughtfulness and assistance are a big reason we always enjoy your store and showroom. We will always make it a stop when we travel north.
