The Steamboat Era Museum opened its doors in 2004. It tells the story of the steamboats and how they altered the lives of everyone along the Chesapeake Bay. The steamboats provided an economic lifeline. The cities of Norfolk and, more predominately, Baltimore acted as gateways to the world beyond. The cities provided the markets, the towns provided the goods, and the steamboats provided a means to both. The era is brought to life with models, artifacts, photos . Here you can step back into time; a romantic time full of adventure, splendor and prosperity. Coming this year! The Pilothouse of the Potomac has been restored and will take pride of place in the museum! New exhibits are set to be unveiled with the reopening of the Museum in April, 2021
This is a world class little museum. It's well thought out and beautifully presented. For such a small town, I was surprised to see all the new and creative exhibits that have been installed this year. I did visit last year. The staff are all quite knowledgeable and super friendly. Only $5 for admission and kids under 12 are free and welcomed with a smile! Since I'm a "happy shopper", the gift shop has something for everyone-hooray! I left feeling richer in spirit learning so much about the Era of the Steamboat on the nearby rivers. While it's a small museum, it is full of history. This is a "don't miss" if you are visiting the Northern Neck.

Menokin is the most engaging preservation project in America. Once the home of Francis Lightfoot Lee, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, and his wife, Rebecca Tayloe Lee, you can experience an 18th century house like never before. We are rehabilitating this National Historic Landmark, now in a collapsed and deconstructed state, in a revolutionary way using original fabric and architectural glass to replace missing walls, floors, and roof. As we stretch our lens back over time to reveal how this house was built, and stories about the builders, we are also making remarkable strides to preserve and interpret all peoples and cultures that made their homes on this site. Admission: Entrance to the grounds and visitor's center is free. Guided tour inside the ruin: $15 per person (12 and under free)
This was our first trip to the Northern Neck, and we did not know anything about Menokin before visiting. We're glad we came. It's not easy to find, but well worth the trip, in particular the hard hat tour of the restoration-in-progress. The visitors center is a good introduction to the history of the property. Being able to see in detail--and touch--wood trim, windows, doors, and other stored and catalogued artifacts from the original house is fascinating. It's remarkable how well they have been preserved, considering their age. The hard hat tour is well worth the $15 fee. Walking through and around the building allows you to see masonry (brick and stone), carpentry, stucco, and roofing from the original structure, and gives a good glimpse of the construction methods of a bygone era. The planned work will restore existing areas of the original building, and will have structural glass walls and flooring for the other areas. It will be a creative design that respects the original without artificially rebuilding what is missing.

A state park that consists of rivefront beaches, hiking trails, and boat rentals over 1,300 acres.
Spent a lovely 5 August days at Westmoreland State Park. The housekeeping cabins are clean and cozy. The beaches are lovely, we found a few shark teeth at Fossil Beach. We hiked all the trails, rented kayaks, swam in the river. The park was not crowded. Masks were required in the visitor center and camp store. We saw plenty of wildlife on our walks - including deer, osprey, eagles, snakes, turtles and bats. Staying in the cabins was very relaxing. We brought cleaning supplies and paper towels - along with linens and food. The kitchen was stocked with dishes and basic cooking utensils. We didn't need anything that want provided to make our meals. The cabin was equipped with a decent AC - though a little loud at night. Park provides each cabin with one bundle og firewood. Additional bundles can be purchased.

Natural reserve that consists of 213 acres of pine forests and a beach on Chesapeake Bay.
After a nice quiet walk through the woods (a little muddy after it rains), and over boardwalk covered marshes you make your way to the water's edge. Had a very peaceful, relaxing day walking the beach and exploring the beautiful serene surroundings. The only drawback is there is no restroom, so make note of that before visiting.

A National Monument is the site where four generations of Washingtons lived.
Very much enjoyed visiting Pope's Creek, the birthplace of George Washington, and site of a rebuilt farm plantation meant to reflect what was there at the time. Beautiful grounds, and easy walking. Enthusiastic and informative staff, especially "Ranger Bill", who had what appeared to be encyclopedic knowledge of the Washington family, the times, and the plantation, and was a wonderful storyteller. Well worth a visit!
