The gentleman we encountered when we stopped in at the beginning of our first-time visit to Mt. Airy was very helpful. He even called down to Wally's to schedule our squad car tour for us. It's worth stopping here if you've never been to Mt. Airy before.

The Andy Griffith Museum

Andy Griffith's hometown of Mount Airy, North Carolina is home to the new Andy Griffith Museum. Come see the largest collection of Andy Griffith memorabilia collected by his friend Emmett Forrest. The collection features hundreds of items from the life and career of Andy Griffith in movies, television, and music as well as a variety of memorabilia. There are even actual props from The Andy Griffith Show and Matlock given by Andy Griffith himself. The collection also includes items donated by cast members and actors from The Andy Griffith Show, as well as a special exhibit on the career of actress and current Mount Airy resident Betty Lynn who played Thelma Lou. Admission to the Andy Griffith Museum also includes an exhibit on the Siamese Twins; a photography exhibit "Mount Airy to Mayberry," and the Old-Time Music Heritage Hall at the Historic Earle Theatre, all within walking distance of the museum. The Andy Griffith Museum is open 7 days a week. Closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Of all the historic sites we visited in Mount Airy, the Andy Griffith Museum was the only one that charged admission ... a whopping $8 per person. And that eight dollars buys a whole lotta history. You gain entrance to the main museum, the separate Siamese Twins Exhibit, the Mayberry mural exhibit in the bottom floor of the theater, PLUS admission to the Historic Earle Theatre a few blocks away. Every one of these is interesting in its own right. It was a wonderful coincidence that we happened to visit on the anniversary of Andy's birthday. He would have been 93 years old June 1st, and the museum honored the date with a Happy Birthday Andy display. I learned a lot about Andy Griffith that I didn't know before. He was a recording artist who released several albums and actually headlined with Elvis Presley, July 1955 in Jacksonville Florida. Mental note for trivia night - one of the Danny Thomas TV show episodes was the pilot for The Andy Griffith Show. Andy Griffith played a leading role in a dozen movies, in addition to his three TV hit series (The Andy Griffith Show, Andy Of Mayberry, and Matlock). One of my favorite movies of all time - Waitress - featured Andy and Keri Russell, and was his last movie in 2007. The museum houses the largest collection in the world of Andy Griffith memorabilia, many of the items donated by Andy himself and his wife Cindi, including TV sets, scripts, awards, theater playbills, original record albums. We probably spent an hour in the main museum, and we moved along quickly because there was so much else to see. I'd advise allowing at least two full hours to check out all four exhibits.

This was a new event held on November 2nd All Sould Day. What a Fabulous job their organizers did putting on a beautiful informative fun experience. I have heard of this and wanted to go to one but never had the chance and to think it was right in my home town. They had a traveling exhibit from Wake Forest University's Anthropology department on the history and origin. Along with actual artifacts. An Offenda (a type of alter) where you could place pictures of your deceased loved ones along with tokens of remembrance. Beautiful. They had several arts and crafts for children of all ages to do free of charge as well as Wonderful dance groups and music by a real Mariachi band and food vendors with authentic foods to round out the funniest day I have ever had at a museum. Cant wait for next year! Thank you for a Great time

Stopped in with my wife while we were visiting Mount Airy, NC. This store had quite a unique selection of old fashioned candies, all loose and you self-bagged your selections. Gloves were provided to add to the sanitization of the store. The prices were very good compared to other similar stores we have visited. The service was friendly and efficient. We enjoyed our time there and got some tasty treats for later.
