The village of Saorge overhangs the gorges of the Roya. The church of the Franciscan convent, which was founded in 1633, was built in the Baroque style. The refectory features painted decorations from the 17th century and the cloister is decorated with 18th century frescœs showing the life of Saint Franis of Assisi. The monastery houses a fascinating collection of nine sundials from the 17th, 18th, and 19th century. The church features one of the oldest Stations of the Cross paintings in the Alpes-Maritimes region.

I came back to Breil specifically to be able to do justice to this little museum, as last time I didn't have more then 20 minutes or so to realise that there was a lot to see here. Three associations support the preservation of the railway coaches, old trams, buses and locomotive engine that was donated after the Second World War and plied along the Cote d'Azur. Celebrating the railway line that goes from Tende to Nice and Ventigmilia, in its heyday, you could travel all the way to Switzerland along this line. And for the dads who like train sets, (and anyone else for that matter), don't miss the impressive reconstruction of some of the fascinating engineering feats that feature along the route of the Train des Merveilles. I recommend you spend at least an hour if not more time to explore the history of transport in this mountainous region. It is open every afternoon, seven days a week from 2pm through to the end of August when it is open just at the weekends.
