An hour outside Tokyo by train, Mt. Takao is popular among city dwellers for the views from its seven hiking trails. To enjoy the view without the work, take the cable car or chairlift to the top and visit the Takaosan Yakuoin Yuuki-ji Temple, founded in 744.
I went on a Wednesday. Very easy to get there. I bought the discounted pass (roundtrip by keio line and roundtrip of car cable) 1300 yen. You should check the weather before you go. If its cloudy it’d be difficult to see the Fuji If you have no experience its ok because there is a road pavimented. Very peaceful.

The cable car is the steepest in Japan and is one of the three ways to go to Mt Takao. There’s a chairlift or people can also go to the top by walking. The cable car is 930¥ return or 480¥ one way. It takes less then 10 min. to go to the top. From there you need another short walk (depending on the weather, icy pathway in winter) where if you’re lucky will be greeted by an a,axing view of my Fuji and Tokyo. It’s an extremely popular hike for family so best to go during the week if you like peace and quiet. Highly recommend.

The lines for the cable car were too long so we took the chair lift both ways. The view coming down was awesome. Getting on and off is easy and lots of help is provided. Much better than walking.

I visited when the autumn colors were still out and it was a magical experience - the temple itself was unique with tengu (mountain guardian) statues and dango stalls, which was perfect for the chilly weather.
