We spent the afternoon in Dieppe on a beautiful, hot summer day. Walking along the beach, it was so hard to imagine the terrible devastation that happened here on Aug 19, 1942. We were especially moved by the memorial along the beach to the Calgary soldiers who were stuck in tanks on the beach that fateful day. It was good to see the memorials to all the different regiments from across Canada who took part in the raid. We then walked to the Canadian memorial and sat in the shade, taking some time to reflect on the sacrifice made on the beautiful beach that day. We will remember. We would also recommend visiting the nearby Canadian war cemetery - it was also very moving and a lovely spot next to farmers' fields.

From the Newhaven ferry port this green way is a 30 minute cycle ride that went through peaceful countryside to my overnight stay in Forges some 30 miles away. The verse is in good condition ad wide enough for cyclists and pedestrians travelling in opposite directions.

Although quite small, this church is full of character and specifically has a maritime theme. On the cliff top overlooking the harbour one feels it was built to look after those whose work is on the sea.

The Dieppe museum has been housed in the castle since 1923. The castle was first constructed in the 14th century. The museum offers a pluridisciplinary collection of 2 300 objects exhibited throughout 15 rooms. The collection is an extensive illustration of the wealth created from the town’s maritime history and its port. Discover a unique collection of ivories, impressionist paintings, prints by Georges Braque and souvenirs of Camille Saint-Saens. Free booklet in english available at the front desk!
They had by chance a very amazing natural history collection on display in the temporary rooms which i completely loved! But the whole museum is lovely. In particular, the exquisite carved ivory collection is a wonder of tiny sculpting. there are many famous painters in the collection who have painted in Dieppe and the chateau itself - it is a great experience to walk around it even if it didn't have such a lovely collection of art and artefacts to be inspired by.
