Route des Montagnes

We drove from Baie-Saint-Paul to La Baie, overnighted in Chicoutimi and returned to La Malbaie after a cruise on the Saguenay River at one of the provincial parks. The next day we drove through Saint-Aime-Des-Lacs to another provincial park on the Malbaie River. The scenery during all our drives was spectacular and traffic was very light. The Saguenay River is 200 metres deep, tidal and partly salty and is very photogenic. We visited a number of cheese “farms”, an oyster mushroom farm and had some magnificent dinners in Chicoutimi and La Malbaie. The Charlevoix region is a jewel and a great are for a foodie road trip.

Regional Park of Hautes-Gorges of the Malbaie River

There are many things to do in the park, but we only hiked. And for hiking, there are many different choices, with some truly great scenes/views. Best is to visit the websites (SEPAQ) and get their 'Discovery Magazine/Guide' (.pdf) to learn about the trails. - For sure some simple hikes and some more aggressive ones. Good facilities for your comfort, but note that you need to get an access pass, on line, in advance ($7.50 + taxes per person). - Worth it. Drive is about 40-45 minutes from La Malbaie

Charlevoix Maritime Museum (Le Musee Maritime de Charlevoix)

My wife and I visited in August 2018. What a pleasant surprise this museum was. In fact, it was one of the highlights of our trip through Charlevoix and Saguenay! The museum, in French and English, paints an amazing portrait of maritime life of the past hundred years. The displays, the artefacts, and the boats (which can be explored) were fascinating. Adults and kids will love this place – we did!

Perfect day, Perfect trail We hike the 8.6 km to the top. The trails are very well maintain. The trail is consider difficult but it is, for the most part very well groomed with very little obstacle (rocks or boulder) in your way until lac George. At the top after climbing many many stairs you get a 360 degree beautiful view of la Malbaie, Baie St Paul and so much more. I would highly recommend this trail.
