10 Budget-friendly Things to do in Bolton That You Shouldn't Miss

September 2, 2021 Vergie Nakamoto

Bolton (/ˈbɒltən/ ( listen) or locally [ˈbɜʏtn̩]) is a town in Greater Manchester in North West England. A former mill town, Bolton has been a production centre for textiles since Flemish weavers settled in the area in the 14th century, introducing a wool and cotton-weaving tradition. The urbanisation and development of the town largely coincided with the introduction of textile manufacture during the Industrial Revolution. Bolton was a 19th-century boomtown, and at its zenith in 1929 its 216 cotton mills and 26 bleaching and dyeing works made it one of the largest and most productive centres of cotton spinning in the world. The British cotton industry declined sharply after the First World War, and by the 1980s cotton manufacture had virtually ceased in Bolton.

Went here in the Summer on one of the open days. Absolutely fabulous if you like steam engines. Took our teens who were very interested in the workings. Loads to see and some super little model engines too. If you have youngsters- get the quis sheets which made it all very interesting as they had to find the answers in the museum. Staff were super - plenty of time to talk and explain. Loved it

I took a tour of Victoria Hall in the centre of Bolton, together with other U3A members from Preston. Although the entrance was not particularly striking, the building was huge inside. Our excellent guide, Barry, took us on a two hour guided tour, exploring the various rooms, including the church which was built in the style of a music hall, the projector room and the museum. We were particularly fascinated by the Victorian cloakroom. Barry gave us an interesting history of the building and kept us all enthralled with his amusing tales. Thoroughly recommended.

You really cannot beat this place loads of space and lots of different ways to get to it. A walkers dream and great for dog walkers as well , if you can stop them chaseing the ducks and other birds. There is a cafe here but from reviews its best left alone. Take a loaf and feed the local ducks there are hundreds. Really great for free you can even visit the grounds of local turton tower for free as well (no parking charge as well) a real treat for dogs

Octagon Theatre

Reviewed By JulesVinn - Bolton, United Kingdom

Recently saw 'Beryl' , staged by the Octagon in their temporary home at Bolton Library. It was absolutely awesome, everyone of the 4 cast worked very hard and it paid off. Probably one of the best productions I have ever seen, poignant, funny and the fact it was based on a true story made it all the better.
