If you are looking for an active place to stay with world-class attractions, Ohio’s major cities can satisfy any vacation desire. Each offers its own distinct flavor of fun, from professional sports – Bengals (Cincinnati), Cavaliers (Cleveland) and Indians (Cleveland again) – to museums, outdoor activities and more. One of the most famous is the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. If football is your thing, don’t miss the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton. For the science-minded, visit the meat eaters at the Carnivore Conservation Center in the Wilds near Cambridge, dedicated to the breeding and scientific study of endangered mid-sized carnivores. Kids will also love Planet Snoopy in Sandusky or the Columbus Zoo’s Zoombezi Bay Waterpark and Jack’s Landing rides.

A buddy and I reserved the cabin, operated by the marina which is part of the Muskingum Watershed, for a three day fishing trip. Our first day was spent on a lake north of there so we had to drive to the cabin later that evening. I called and informed them of this and they indicated they would leave the door open since we would be there after the marina closed. Not only was the door open but the heat was turned up on a very cold evening and the light was left on so we could see as we entered the cabin. This was very considerate of them. The cabin was nice with all the bare essentials needed. If you do visit please be sure to review the website info since you have to bring certain items such as bath towels. We fished for the second day and late in the day we learned that a severe cold front was coming in that evening which would have a negative effect on the type of fishing we do. We decided not to stay the second evening and informed the staff at the marina. Since they were very familiar with fishing conditions and understood our decision, they refunded our second nights fee. To do this on such short notice was outstanding. Due to this we have already decided to return and stay in early spring for another 2 or 3 day fishing trip. These guys were also very knowledgeable of the lake and fishing conditions and offered us numerous insights. These guys were great.

I went to Hidden Lake Park on a cold drizzly Monday morning in late October. There were only a few fishermen there, I saw nobody on the trails. My only complaint is that they actually blow the leaves off the trail. They were doing that while I was there, and it was pretty annoying and cost me seeing some birds. (If you have to blow leaves…I guess a cold drizzly morning is as good a time as any). I still saw over 30 species and I was there more to walk than bird. They recently did some work on the Birder’s Loop Trail, so it is well marked with woods, fields, ponds, and wetlands. The trails were mostly crushed stone or old camp roads turned into trails. The park is pretty flat with just over 50 feet of elevation change on all the trails. There are two entrances to the park on the same road less than ½ mile apart. The southern entrance it near the large shelter and the archery range. I parked at the northern entrance which is close to the large lake and most of the trails. I was able to stick all the trails in the park together to do a nice 4 miles walk. The Forest Trail is nice and takes you across the street through second growth forest, but it is not marked…not even at the trailhead. The park map says it is .97 miles long…but not all of it is a loop so you must backtrack some so it is actually over 1 ½ miles to walk that trail. The Goldenrod loop trail takes you around a field that is going to meadow. The growth was about chest high. There are great places for picnics and camping around the lake. I will be back with a birding focus during the spring migration.

A scenic river that bisects the city of Fremont and is popular for canoeing and other water sports.
I love fishing the "runs" in Fremont Ohio. I have been fishing there since 1967. Have seen a lot of changes in the river including the installation of the flood wall. Now that the dam has been removed it is a different experience. I look forward to finding out for myself. It has created a lot of new honey holes that never existed before.Hope to get there first when the big ones get there early. I scouted it recently and have always enjoyed the small town hospitality through the locally owned businesses. Want the best it has to offer? Follow the locals. there are several good places to sleep, camp, eat and entertain yourself. Just met the owner of West State Street Grille. Has a place that the locals flock to as well as anglers. The most creative menu and incredible employees. If you can catch him between orders you can expect a quick joke or story about the history of the river and the city. His family was the only place to get a real whole walleye cooked to perfection for generations. You will get the whole Fremont experience there and some killer food...try it. Anglers supply is what Wal-Mart wishes it was. try it. A small locally owned expert source for years. Breakfast at Billys or Whiteys a must. Do Fremont right. Find the locals favorites...

The smallest of the Great Lakes, with a mere 871 miles of shoreline, warms quickly in the summer and is perfect for a dip.
Check out the town of Vermillion Ohio also know as the Venice of the Great Lakes. It lies on the shores of Lake Erie in northeastern Ohio. Lots of local shops, restaurants, and beach space. Joe's Pizza & Pies is a family tradition in its 49th year serving residents and visitors from this same location. Pizza, subs, broasted chicken with sides along with pies (fruit and cream) and cookies are made fresh right in the shop. Don't miss Granny's Ice Cream Parlor next door.

Winton woods campground is a nice, clean campground. Our concrete pad was very level (first time we've had concrete). A lot of campgrounds advertise that they have WIFI, this CG really does have WIFI that works! It is advertised that their Halloween festivities are first rate, we'll have to go back to find out!

This arboretum is a beautiful, peaceful place to spend time walking the trails or relaxing by the pond. There is a paved trail that encompasses the pond with benches for resting and watching the swallow acrobatics over the water in the evening. Another trail goes into the woods. There is a picnic shelter near the college parking lot with four picnic tables. Clean and well-maintained restrooms are near the main entrance. There is no admission fee.
