Northumberland is blessed with many beautiful beaches and this wide sandy bay is one of the best. Tucked away behind a golf course and with a view of Dunstanburgh castle this is an unspoilt and well kept secret perfect for dogs and the grandkids loved paddling in the sea.

Fontburn Reservoir has a stunning walk circling the water with spacious picnic areas where you can spot an abundance of wildlife and wild flowers. There is a fun playground and visitor centre for refreshments and ice cream. A fun relaxing stroll in the country with a furry dinosaur who is guaranteed to make you smile. Come and walk one of our wonderful Alpacas in the Upper North Tyne Valley situated in the Northumberland National park. The beautiful countryside is within sight of the Kielder Dam just outside the village of Falstone, close to Bellingham. Booking essential. We also have two holiday cottages at the farm too, these are called Ferny Rigg Byre and Merry Burn Barn. Bookable through cottages.com

Derwent Reservoir is an oasis of peace and quiet. We parked at Pow Hill Country Park and then walked along to the head of the reservoir on the user friendly, all user path, good for pushchairs and wheelchairs. If you walk across to the other side of reservoir there are picnic areas with lovely views. It is gloriously quiet and is a great place to get away from the hustle and bustle of life for a while. You could spend a couple of hours here or all day, walking the trails and having a picnic. Highly recommend.

Love the North Gare and Teesmouth area, it is stunning. Free car park which is always a bonus, then you can just wander. At low tide it is nice to walk all the way along the sand to the mouth of the Tees, and round towards the Able yard where the crabbing rings are. Seals often pop up in the water or along the sands. Fantastic array of wildlife, stunning views, great to watch the ships come in and out of the Tees, and a great back drop of current and declined industry. Lovely sands where you can sit and watch the world go by, beach is pretty clean, and despite the industry, water is crystal clear. Lots of crabs and sand eels about. If you are careful, go onto the old pier at the North Gare and walk to the end - it really does feel like you are at the end of the world!
