Linking the Mediterranean to the Red Sea, this canal stretches more than 100 miles extending from Port Said to Port Tawfiq (near Suez), connecting the Mediterranean Sea with the Gulf of Suez and thence with the Red Sea.
We made the transit of the canal onboard a cruise ship, and it was intriguing. The basics - the ship will drop anchor the night before and then sail early in the morning with a transit lasting all day. For the photographer, this means adjusting shooting conditions ranging from low light levels to bright sandy stretches. Points of interest include bridges and ferries and small buildings. The Nile side seems populated while the other is mostly desert and guardposts. When you exit be sure to look for the boat retrieving the pilot. Regarding gear, you will move from side to side a lot, so travel light. My DSRL with a zoom lens was all that I needed. Addendum - I would have included more photos but the site froze. You will have an interesting day shooting.

This artificial lake, which was created after the construction of the Aswan Dam, is more than 500 kilometers long of which 150 belong to the Sudan.
We traveled on the Movenpick MS Prince Abbas with our Odyssey tour group. We had a wonderful tour director who led us through remarkable sites and Nubian temples. The Temples of Philae was our first visit in Aswan. The next day we visited the Kalabasha Temple which was moved and reconstructed on higher ground and impressive. We also saw the Dakka Tample, the Temple of Amada, the settlement of Karr Ibrim, other sites and the most spectacular, the Abu Simbel Temple Complex. Great Trip!

Stretching for 4,187 miles, the longest river in the world flows from its major source, Lake Victoria in east central Africa, through Uganda, Sudan, Ethiopia and northwards into Egypt to the Mediterranean Sea.
We were looked after from start to finish - excellent service. We travelled as 2 couples on the Blue Shadow II - we were on the second from top deck and the boat is fabulous - huge rooms, lovely top deck, excellent food in the spacious dining room (buffet-style). Staff are very friendly and attentive - nothing is too much bother. Also we paid tips up front so no issues with that. Our guide was excellent - gave us a full programme overview the night before, arranged all transport, stayed with us on every trip and very knowledgeable. The 4 of us had our guide and driver for every excursion to ourselves - the included ones and the extras. The included tours are comprehensive with a typical day being an early morning tour and back to the boat by noon for lunch, relaxing afternoon watching the Nile go by followed by evening meal. We did the Abu Simbel and balloon rides as extras plus the bird watching (excellent afternoon trip). Abu Simbel is worth the wake up call and 3 hr drive there and back - we left at 04:30, toured the site for 2hrs and back for lunch at 12:30 (our driver was swift!!). The balloon ride is very very gentle with awesome views. We added in an overnight stay in Cairo at the end to see the Pyramids and museum - brilliant experience and well worth the extra day. Orbital have been superb - cannot fault them at all.

This was the most incredible stop on our tour of Ras Mohammed Park. Diving from the boat into aqua marine waters then swimming to the pure white sand of the island, laying in the warm brilliant emerald water. It is like nothing I have ever experienced before.

Situated close to the Pyramids of Dahshur the lake is a green oasis. It can be seen from the pyramid themselves and makes a person believe the the stones for the building of the pyramids arrived here on boats when the Nile flowed closer to the area. As we drove past it, we were able to see numerous birds of different species even in winter.
