Once one of ancient Greece’s most important cities, today Syracuse (Siracusa in Italian) is a lively town of about 125,000 on Sicily’s southeast coast. The city overflows with amazing remnants from its long history. Romans, Vandals and Normans are but a few of those who ruled here after the Greeks. In Syracuse’s harbor, Ortygia Island (also called Città Vecchia or Old City) is the site of many of the main attractions, including the seventh-century cathedral and the Fountain of Arethusa.

Maecò Ortigia B&B is located in via Landolina n.5, as part of the Palazzo Francica Nava which was originally built in the 15th century in the Catalan Gothic style. Following the devastating earthquake of 1693 the building was rebuilt with some Baroque additions and used by Jesuits until it was bought by the Francica Nava family, from which it still retains the name. The renovation, completed at the beginning of 2016, followed the coherence of the original architecture with the intention being to keep alive the typical Sicilian atmosphere, and recreate a place to feel at home.
Old palazzo in center of Ortigia. Steps from the Duomo, but instantly quiet when you close the main door. Large, clean, and comfortable rooms. Very welcoming with nice breakfast and other touches. Staff was very helpful with arrangements and recommendations.

L'Approdo delle Sirene is in an ancient, elegant building, lapped by the waters of the natural harbour. It is a charming residence based on a refined atmosphere and typically Sicilian hospitality. The breakfast, enriched by the strong flavours from the Sicilian earth, is served on the panoramic terrace among jasmine, bougainvillea and a magnificent view onto the blue sea.
Location is fabulous just across the bridge onto the island of Ortygia. Danielle gave us excellent advice on how to access the property by car. Parking as in every town/city in Sicily was difficult to say the least. Trying to find white line parking (free) requires patience and often having a decent walk back to where you are staying. No exception here, you have to be off the island and search. Our room was okay, quite tired as he building has age. We’d booked a room with a balcony which looked nothing like the one featured on the website. You could only stand on it with a big step down, and it overlooked, not the harbour, but a side street, any slight view of the harbour masked by trees. Disappointing. Breakfast, served on the top floor terrace area was very good. There are only two tables on the outside terrace, which were of course quickly occupied, the remainder in a quite small lower section. The quality and choice of the continental breakfast was very good. L’Approdo delve Sirene is quite an expensive option, hence we didn’t think it gave value for money. If you book a room with a balcony, avoid room 2.

Aretusa Vacanze is located in a completely renovated 17th-century building at the centre of Syracuse's Ortygia Island. It offers self-catering rooms. At Aretusa Vacanze B&B all rooms are spacious and offer a kitchenette, free Wi-Fi, and an LCD satellite TV. Aretusa Vacanze is close to the Arethusa Fountain and Piazza Duomo, one of the main squares. The sea is a 5-minute walk away. Breakfast and aperitifs are served on the roof terrace, with views of the Bay of Syracuse.
We had very fond memories of our last stay and had wanted to come back as soon as the situation allowed it. And we were not disappointed. Stefano and his family make this a great place to be, comfortable rooms with self-catering facilities if you wanted them, but one of the high points of being in this quiet Ortigia hotel is breakfast on their roof terrace; noteworthy: Stefano's father makes a very large number of excellent and unusual jams! We will be back, there is no questions!

"I Santi Coronati B&B Ortigia Suite", vi accoglie nel cuore del centro storico di Siracusa, fondato dai Greci sulla piccola isola di Ortigia, Patrimonio dell'umanita UNESCO. Suites spaziose e luminose con parcheggio privato, all'interno dell'antico "Palazzo Bonanno", raffinato esempio di barocco siciliano.
Be warned - there is NOTHING tranquil or charming about an expensive room overlooking an enclosed historic courtyard which has outdoor seating for a bar/ restaurant. Music was being played outdoors even after the bar’s supposed closing time at 12:30am.

Clung to the sedimentary rock from which it's named after: "Giuggiulena" the building is almost a place set apart, a secret place, a shelter of serenity and natural beauty overlooking the sea accompanied by the waves and the moon. The sight goes up to the big harbour's creek and Ortigia, from where is just 15 minute walk. The love we feel for this place and our guests naturally makes us pay attention and extra care to every single detail in order to offer them joyful days and unforgettable nights.
There was, seriously, just nothing wrong whatsoever (and we all know most places always have..."something"). Everything was perfect - a huge room with a balcony directly over the sea, the sound of waves, a view to the horizon day and night. Lovely bathroom and such a comfy bed. A breakfast beyond belief...simply fabulous and it kept on coming and such wonderful hosts, the two sisters were so lovely! Just perfect, I simply wouldn't stay anywhere else in Syracuse!

This was our final stop after a week in Siciliy and it was our favourite stay of the trip. Stefano was immediately so welcoming, he helped us with our bags and got us drinks and spent time explaining the location, the best place to park to visit Ortiga and recommended several places to eat. Our room was amazing, we were on the top floor with a big beautiful terrace looking out to sea and to a lake filled with flamingos. The B&B is around a 10 minute drive to Syracuse/ Ortiga and we loved how quiet and peaceful it was. The B&B feels lovely and private. Stefano has thought of lots of little touches, there was an espresso machine in the room (the only place we stayed that had this), a proper hairdryer, pegs to hang wet clothes and a nice big shower. Stefano also prepares breakfast every morning in the lovely little dining room in the garden. Each morning is a different menu with a variety and delicious bits. We had to check out early on our final day and Stefano prepared our breakfast early so we could still enjoy it before we left which we really appreciated. I couldn't rate this place highly enough for anyone staying near Syracuse.

We stayed at Il Duomo one night earlier this month. The location is awesome, right on the magnificent piazza, one of the nicest piazzas we've seen in Italy. We were given early access to our room, another big plus which was much appreciated. Excellent clean room, good air conditioning. But then we discovered the WIFI didn't work in our room and much worse, there was no hot water. Even after letting it run for several minutes. I told the hard-working front desk manager, who said we should let the water run. I told him I had. He said he would look into it and that a technician would be there the next day to fix the WIFI. Since we were staying just the one night, that wasn't much of a help. I returned to the room, let the water run for several more minutes, and sure enough, it was hot. I returned to the front desk, told the very busy manager it was fine. A little while later, again no hot water. By this time, the manager had left and it being a B&B, there was no one available to talk to. We tried several times again and then the next morning but still, no hot water. And as a B&B, it is locked after 9pm, requiring 3 keys to get to our room. One key to open the wooden door facing the Piazza. No problem. Another key to open the door to the B&B. We struggled with this and found it very difficult to open the door. At 11pm, with no one around, we wondered what we could do if we couldn't get in. We pounded on the door, no response, and finally, we were able to open the door. A stressful few moments. So it could have been so good, a great B&B in many ways, especially location, but since hot water is one of the very basics for accommodation, we can't wholeheartedly recommend it. Add in unreliable WIFI, and a difficult door to unlock, and we can't give it more than 3 out of 5 stars.
