This family-run hotel is newly renovated with clean and modern rooms and a lovely spa. If you have the option for half board, take it. The dinners were fantastic (salad bar with a lot of great and fresh options and then a choice of starter, main and dessert with some staples and some new choices everyday). The deer stew was amazing (no gamey flavor at all--I've never tasted deer that I enjoyed but found myself envying my husband's dish) and traditional cheese dumplings made in the traditional style. The breakfast buffet was also good with eggs made to order and plenty of options. You are right across the street from a river with a walking trail the 1.2 km to St. Jakob proper (the trail has interesting sculptures carved along the way) and quite close to several hikes, including the famous hike to the oldest stone huts in Austria. Our room had beautiful views of the mountains--ask to stay on the side of the hotel facing away from the road so that you have a better balcony view.

Soweit so gut.

Very nice family owned hotel, with a very friendly staff. The breakfast is excellent with a large variety of food and fresh bread. The rooms are very clean, the beds are very comfortable. The location is also perfect, everything is only a few steps away. The location was beautiful with mountains surrounding and lots of opportunities for walking and hiking. Unfortunately there's a small church next to the pension that rings the bell in every 30 minutes. At first at 6 am. By any chance you won't wake up to that noise at 6, at 7 am you definitely will 'cause it rings 3 times 20. I've counted it :D

We went up by car (of course) because it is quite a walk (not for those who are not accustomed hiking) to get there. But it is worth going there. The waitress (probably the owner) is more than friendly and being served is a joy. Drinks come quickly and the food is well prepared. I had the "Zwiebelrostbraten", and mij wife the "Cordon Blue Pute" ( turkey).... we highly appreciate he quality of the dish and the quantity was even "higher". We went back to our B & B with a stuffed an satisfied feeling. Go there,...you won't regret it.

If the food was nice for reasonable prices (not cheap however) the lady when I called to book a table was not friendly at all. We had a dinner that was eventually ok, but almost kindly requested to quit without dessert as nobody was left in the restaurant, the service was not friendly and / or pleasant and we did not get the money back from the cash we used to pay the bill (they do not take credit cards). bill was 77.30 euros and we would have expected to get our 2.70 euros coins back... Next time we will try to find another place

We booked the superior 2 bedroom apartment at Haus Scheiber and we were not disappointed. Plenty of space for our family of 3. The modern looking apartment was in immaculate condition and came complete with everything we could want - 2 comfortable bedrooms and a larger sitting room / dining area / kitchen. Oven, microwave, dishwasher and 2 televisions were also included. Our balcony area had a fantastic view of the Deferregen valley and mountains. The apartments were ideally located for our many day trips to Lienz, Sillian and the many other attractions of East Tyrol. There is a Spar store located 200m away and a children's playground about 5 mins walk. As a guest of Haus Scheiber we also got free access to the swimming pool and sauna at Haus Passler which is located 100m away. The facilities here are also fantastic - everything looks brand new. Additionally, we got free bike rental for 1 day at the Sport Passler store located next to Haus Passler. We had a fantastic holiday in Sankt Jakob and Haus Scheiber played a huge part in that.
