We stayed here for one night only, after a long day starting in Adelaide and sight seeing Kangaroo Island. The hotel had booked us in for an evening meal, as we arrived around 6:00pm and there are no other options from this venue. The hotel itself is a little dated, but still stylish and comfortable. Our bed was comfortable but the shower had limited water flow- understandable of an island with a shortage of water. Our evening meal was tasty - abalone and a cheese platter with a bottle of local wine. Breakfast was from a set menu and was served in good time. My only issue with the hotel is that it is rather isolated. American River is not a large community and from what I saw one had no option but to dine at the restaurant- ok for us as we were only there one night! There are a couple of short walks around the hotel as well. A quick wander down to the water was all we had time for.

I will start at the good points, great views from the balcony and room, over American River, unfortunately, that is it. Now for our experience. Check in - walk upstairs to reception past cobwebbed dirty windows and tired building. Oh yes reception was a whiteboard with your name on it, room number and key in the door. Wifi - 2 passwords provided on the whiteboard , neither of them worked. Restaurant - forget it unless you happen to be there Wednesday night! Rooms - tired and dated in need of some love and care. Room was clean with good views. Heating was good, bathroom was clean but dated. Staff - what staff? There for 4 nights and my wife thinks she may have caught a glimpse of a staff member one day, it could also have been another guest. They did manage to replenish our toilet paper supply by putting two rolls on the ground outside our unit. Don’t do it - stay elsewhere.

After staying in Penneshaw for the week & being curious about Penneshaw Beach stay travelling past each day we were ready to leave saying - we must check that place out. Then … in came the weather, no ferry we were stuck! Nowhere to stay we were so lucky to be picked off the list of many enquires & offered a room for the night. So comfortable, quality linen, very clean and modernised, plenty of space for 3 adults & a child, great touches of fridge, microwave, tea & coffee & fantastic location. Easy walk to supermarket, eateries etc. The owners were so friendly & kind. It’ll be on the list for a return trip for sure and we will never forget how fortunate we were. Thank you

We visited Stranraer just after the wildfires of winter 2020, and amidst the early parts of the coronavirus pandemic. Our long planned vacation in Australia and NZ was cut short due to NZ closing its borders, and our need to bring our study abroad student home from Sydney. Suffice it to say, this was a very stressful time for what was supposed to be a dream family vacation. Lyn and Graham were AMAZING!!! Not only do they run a 1st class Homestead, with unbelievable gourmet breakfasts and dinners, they were also wonderful companions- with interesting history and stories to tell. Graham took us on an early morning tour of the sheep farm for some beautiful sunrise photos. Lyn helped us navigate the emotional aspects of getting our travel abroad daughter back to Sydney early to pack- providing both calming words of wisdom, arranging transportation and taking her to the airport herself. After 3 days they felt like family, and we hope someday to return. They are closed now for the season and due to the virus, but please we encourage anyone to GO VISIT KANGEROO ISLAND AND STRANRAER- an incredible experience!!! (i will add, there was plenty of wildlife to see as well including some kangaroos in the Homestead backyard)

Tuscan villa style bed and breakfast.
My family and I spent two nights at Molly’s Run with Paul and Charmaine and their sweet pup, the adorable Molly. We fell in love with her! Molly’s Run is a beautiful Tuscan style villa that overlooks the ocean. Paul and Charmaine are the most wonderful hosts! As soon as you arrive, you feel like you are family. They are so generous, welcoming and hospitable that you never want to leave. Charmaine is a gourmet cook and we felt like we were at a 5 star restaurant at every meal! Paul tells the most wonderful stories and after dinner, he took us out on photo safaris. We saw so many animals, it was incredible! Honestly, this place is magical and was a highlight of our trip. We highly recommend Molly’s Run and thank Paul and Charmaine for the beautiful memories we made there.

Pristine Kangaroo Island Accommodation. After a days touring on Kangaroo Island drive down a 3km private road to The Mary Ellen, a luxurious yet warm and cosy 2 bedroom, rustic log cabin nestled in a magnificent bushland setting. Eleanor River Homestead is a 250 acre property located amongst rolling hills and valleys on the banks of the Eleanor River offering the best Self Contained accommodation on Kangaroo Island.
We took two children with us to see the great Kangaroo Island and search the web and found this cute little house . In the middle of the island. Was about an hour from getting of the boat and about 5 I’m on dirt. Road wasn’t to bad. The house is awesome . Small kangaroos came up at night and in morning. But must be quiet not to scare away.. there is a BBQ to use and the place has all you need. Must bring own food and no laundry. But who cares. Power is from solar and battery back up so remember turn of all things not using.. very peaceful and beautiful. Where it is everything is not to far away Max 1 hour Will stay again. We meet the owners very happy and friendly Thank you ?

Flour Cask Bay Retreat, affordable solar eco retreat built 2006. Views, absolute peace and serenity [max 2 couples at any one time], Beach access by road 2kms, complimentary tour of property. Ideally situated as a base from which to explore K.I. Located on 200 acres in total and adjoining approximately 1000 acres of native bushland, 2 kilometres from the south coast of the island, our greatest drawcard is the abundance of kangaroos and wallabies that migrate from the bushland onto the property and can be easily seen in large numbers at dawn and dusk. Echidnas, endangered Rosenberg's goannas, a great variety of birdlife can be encountered on this rural estate.
We booked the retreat as a quiet spot for a few days over the New Year. It's self-contained and off-grid, with only two double rooms available. The bed is comfortable, the kitchen has all the necessaries except for an oven (BBQ on the veranda) and the bathroom is good. The laundry is self-service. John, our host, was very amenable and lives in the opposite end of the building. Other reviews criticise the driveway. From the tarmac of Hog Bay Road, Old Salt Lake Road is 4km of reasonable clay-surfaced road on which I could maintain an easy 60-70kmh in a Ford Focus. The driveway is 2km long and is rough. It's rocky in places and probably easier in a 4wd, but passable gently in first gear in the Focus. We wondered what we'd booked the first time, but subsequent trips became an opportunity to watch the abundant wildlife. It's about 10 minutes from Hog Bay Road to the front door. There is a koala resident in the garden and numerous goannas and kangaroos are frequent visitors. The location is halfway between Kingscote and Penneshaw (30 minutes either way), making this an ideal spot from which to explore Kanagaroo Island.

The Open House B&B is a traditional style accommodation with four rooms fully ensuited in the heart of Kangaroo Island with easy access to the North and South.
Me and my friend were due to be here tomorrow but The B&B was really flexible in bringing it forward a day after being let down at some questionable ‘accommodation’ on the south of the island. When we arrived we were met with a lovely welcome from Jane, she’s settled us into the rooms, helped us out with some island info for the night and showed us where the launderette was. The rooms are clean, cosy and bright. The shower is incredible just what we needed after a day on the quad bikes. We’re looking forward to bacon and eggs for breakfast in the morning. Thank you, from Ben and Tim
