If not for the modern-day goods sold in the retail establishments, you might think Galena was frozen in time. The six-block Main Street boasts striking examples of various architectural styles, ranging from French Colonial to Greek Revival, and a whopping 85% of the town is a national historic district. General Ulysses S. Grant, the 18th U.S. President, lived here briefly before leaving to head the Union troops in the Civil War. Upon his triumphant return, the town presented him with an elegant mansion. That house and other restored historic homes are open to the public. There's much more here to fascinate the history enthusiast: the Old Market House and the Historical Society and Museum, housed in a stunning Italianate home. Before its Civil War glory days, Galena was a booming lead-mining town. Today, you can descend underground into the Vinegar Hill Lead Mine. But don't stay down there too long, or you won't get to enjoy the rolling hills and lush valleys of this charming getaway, which also offers fine dining, numerous bed and breakfasts, golfing and antiquing.

This was the best bed & breakfast I have ever stayed at. The rooms were beautiful in this old mansion. We were fortunate to get the Tower Room which I believe is the honeymoon suite. Booked this as a surprise for my wife on our 45th anniversary. It was the best choice ever. Paul is the most gracious host ever. The breakfasts which were served were nothing short of amazing. If staying in Galena, this is the place to be. Thank you so much Cloran for an unforgettable few days.

With over 50 years of combined experience in the hospitality/service industry between the two of us, we've been able to create a place where you can relax and be yourself without judgement. We break the stereotype when it comes to bed and breakfasts - no crazy wallpaper, baby dolls, or doilies, and definitely no pretension! What you will find is fresh decor that while elegant is still relaxing, award-winning homemade food, and service that is intuitive and personalized yet laid back and unobtrusive. We believe that just because we provide a beautiful place to stay doesn't mean we have to be hoity toity. Aldrich Guest House is also the first and only cannabis friendly bed and breakfast in Illinois! We have built a separate 'tiny house' for guests to consume in while they're here making sure that everyone can enjoy their stay in whatever way they want while still respecting each other. You deserve a break - relax, unwind, and be yourself at Aldrich Guest House! Robert and Douglas, Innkeepers/Owners
The Aldrich Guest House is fantastic! We had a three-day stay in May and enjoyed every moment. 1. The historic (and lovingly restored) house is comfortable and conveniently located (an easy 6-7 minute walk to downtown shopping and restaurants). Our room was cozy and inviting. 2. The breakfasts were gourmet all the way - delicious and beautifully presented! 3. The best part of the experience? The proprietors! Robert and Douglas are the best hosts you could hope for - fun, engaging, attentive, and knowledgeable. We will be back!

Walk out of this private, king-sized bed room and take in a breathtaking view of our lake and panoramic tri-state vistas at LeFevre Inn & Resort, Galena, IL. Room also includes a wood-burning fireplace, sofa sleeper, coffee maker, mini refrigerator and hair dryer.
Great service and only 5 minutes from downtown. This is a modern Inn, not an old house. Clean. Fireplace. Fridge. Nice breakfast (hard-boiled eggs, bagels, yogurt). We make sure we get a room with a Hot Tub. Ramona and her staff (Alfredo and wife) are always helpful. Highly Recommend!!

We felt right at home staying with Jan and Lorraine. They were sweet and very helpful with anything we were looking for. We stayed in the Victorian room which was nice although a little small. The house was beautiful and I really enjoyed looking at all of the antiques and artwork. It was pretty old-fashioned which I didn't mind, but which might turn off other travelers. The breakfast was delicious and our hosts were very sensitive to food allergies etc. when preparing our meal. I will definitely be staying here again when we return to Galena!

Experience the romance of historic Galena in the extraordinary mansion built by legendary steamboat captain Daniel Smith Harris in 1855. A walk-to-town location, evening wine and cheese hour, antique furnishings, and gracious surroundings provide guests with the very finest bed and breakfast experience."Galena's favorite bed & breakfast" is a destination in itself. The Steamboat House showcases architectural excellence with its grand foyer, billiard room, parlors, library and formal dining room, all meticulously restored for guests to enjoy.
The home was build in the late 1800s and is filled with charming details, which are kept very clean. There is a pool table for guests to play and a well stocked library with games, music and books. Communication was good and prompt, the host offered wine and cheese at 5pm and cookies at 8:30pm. Coffee was available at 7:30am and breakfast was served at 9. It was nice to awake to the smell of coffee and bacon! Our room had a gas fireplace in it with a timer which was nice - just turn the knob and there is your fire. there was a TV in the corner. The bathroom was modern and had a nice supply of soap/shampoo etc. There is off street parking in the rear of the building and a lovely gazebo in the front, located just in front of the huge porch - I'm sure it is nice in the summer months. Town is about a 7 minute walk away. The bedding was comfortable however, I didn't love the spring mattress, I'm not used to that type. Otherwise, the experience was lovely. The host is fully vaccinated and she said mask wearing was our choice.

Experience the grandeur of a bygone era in a mansion set high on a hill in Galena, Illinois. The Victorian Mansion has over 1-½ acres of lawn and gardens, centurion trees and three porches. This Italianate Mansion has 8 guestrooms and 8 baths, 4 large parlors and a grand open foyer with a 3-story winding staircase.
We seldom share our feelings about a stay but felt a responsibility to do so now. With great anticipation we stayed at the Galena Inn (formerly the Victorian Mansion) which was followed by great disappointment. We picked this B&B because our trip was last minute, it's proximity to Main St., and because of the mostly positive reviews. We stayed in the Lincoln Room. Two nights, 3/24-25/22, totaling $466.20. We ended up only staying one night. We were warned that once paid, there would be no refund. Yes, we were expecting the “old world experience” (Otherwise why would you stay here?) but at this rate we did not expect there to be: several small bugs by the window floor (I can offer pictures), under the bed and behind the frame is very dirty, extreme coldness as the only heat source was from an ineffective little floor heater which we set at the highest setting (there are radiant heaters in the room and bathroom but they were not working), the bed was firm, the pillows were of very poor quality, and there was not one cup for drinking. Also, for varying reasons, we are use to eating breakfast at 7:00 am therefore we were unable to take advantage of the “modified breakfast”; we were unsure what this meant as all online searches listed the Galena Inn as offering a “full breakfast”. This Modified breakfast is only provided from 9:00-10:00 am! Having no one representing the Inn outside of “normal hours” is very unsettling as well. Very disappointed.

Enjoy a cup of coffee or tea by sitting and relaxing on the large front porch or in the gazebo. Our spacious inn is decorated with a mixture of new and old. We are in walking distance to downtown so you can park your car and enjoy the comfortable block stroll to Main Street shopping, wonderful restaurants and interesting sites. Come enjoy yourself at the Avery, "your home away from home".
We decided to stick somewhat closer to home for our 32nd Anniversary getaway trip and the Avery and her new(er) Innkeepers, the warm and friendly Bob and his wife Cherish, did not disappoint. Rooms were immaculate, full breakfast delicious as well as fresh baked cookies in the afternoon. We felt like family. Thank you Bob & Cherish,we will be back soon!

Alice's Snyder House was built in 1856 and retains the charm of a bygone era but with modern amenities. Decorated with many antique treasures, each room has a unique personality. We have private off street parking and you may leave your car and take a short stroll to downtown or General Grant's home. A full breakfast is served at 9 a.m. and always includes a fresh baked pastry. Complimentary refreshments and home baked cookies are available at any hour.
Unfortunately, we did not get to stay at Alice's and it was all due to our own mistake. We booked for the wrong date and arrived a day early. We found out while on our way and tried to call but no one answered the phone. When we arrived, we met Joan on what must have been a bad day for her as we were treated in the most unfriendly manner. No welcome, no greeting, and absolutely no effort was made to try and accommodate us or provide some guidance about other places in the area where we could stay (we had traveled half a day to get there). The door was just closed on us and we were told to leave. We did not even set foot in the hotel. The hotel has a no-cancellation policy so they are completely in their right not to refund us. That said, we only booked the room 12 hours prior (so we hadn't taken their inventory of the market for weeks) and we had hoped for some leniency, like a partial refund but when I called the next day to made an inquiry I got the same rude treatment from Joan.
