Biscay (Basque: Bizkaia; Spanish: Vizcaya) is a province of Spain located just south of the Bay of Biscay. The name also refers to a historical territory of the Basque Country, heir of the ancient Lordship of Biscay. Its capital city is Bilbao. It is one of the most prosperous and important provinces of Spain as a result of the massive industrialization in the last years of the 19th century and first half of the 20th century. Since the deep deindustrialization of the 1970s, the economy has come to rely more on the services sector.

Easily reached by the Metro from the centre of Bilbao. Get off at Larrabasterra and walk 15 minutes (bus available in summer). There are interesting rock formations at the north end of the beach. The sand is very fine.

Imprescindible!

We had been on tour so hadn't had time to do much research on the area.. it was only a few day stop en route to Bilbao for the ferry. The wooded hills nearby were really lovely with eagles and wild boars. But these forests drop down to the sea and typocally squeezed in small towns, some overdeveloped with high rises but all with beautiful beaches, often fishing ports with some leisure boats. On our way to the local bird sanctuary/bird display centre we saw beach signs and decided to take a look. So glad we did.. great sandy rivee estuary leading out to rocky headlands and sea. Different access more river side or by the sea and headland, disabled parking, toilets and a couple of bars one overlooking and one right by the beach with SUP hire. Due to huge sandy beach the sea forms channels which warm quickly so it waa the only warm sea swim we've had on the lovely Basque coast! Great for families, due to facilitues, lifeguards, space, headland rocky cliffs and shallow protected spots to swim even on a rough day. Bar at one end of beach nr the lifeguard station (not overlooking but with some welcome shade) does tasty pinchos, freat range of wines as well as usual beers and a heavier menu of full meals.. it seemed some people go there to eat without being beach goers. Lots of views to make things interesting of towns nestled in hillside opposite (where the bird centre is)as well as church jutting out of the headland. The small coastal train also winds along the coast on the other side of the estuary giving great views. Loved the region generally with combination of great cheap food and drink, woods, hills, shoreline cliff views and beautiful natural sand beaches.
