Grandes Playas

Reviewed By L7768EQdavidd - Devon, United Kingdom

We were very fortunate as we spent 5 weeks (Nov/Dec) in the Riu Place Tres Islas, which is situated in the centre of Grandes Playas, the Dunas of Corralejo and the Natural Park. The impressive Grandes Playas de Corralejo spreads along the coast for almost 3 and a half kilometres and an average width of 60 metres. They sit within the 10 kilometres of beaches that sprawl from Corralejo to Parque Holandes. The main two beaches Playa el Viejo Playa Bajo Negro, are on either side of the hotel. They are the only 2 beaches that provided sunbeds and umbrellas for rent at €9 for 2 sun beds and an umbrella. There are volleyball nets on both beaches and a beach bar on El Viejo. Don't want to use the sunbeds then there is plenty of space to spread out towels on the golden sand. Smaller beaches also formed part of the Grandes Playas, there are no facilities on these beaches. Dotted along the beaches are man made stone circular walls, known as corralitos, which provide shelter from the winds that swirls around the beaches. The  crystal clear waters of the Atlantic Ocean wash the the shores. During our stay we did spent a number of days on the smaller beaches. We also walked along the beaches in both directions from the hotel. A walk along the beaches to Corralejo is a highlight. The smaller beaches are popular with naturists. The Natural Park of the Dunes of Corralejo, which includes the Grandes, was declared a biosphere reserve by UNESCO in May 2009. There is plenty of car parking along the roadside.

Beautiful lagoons with crystal clear water and amazing, sandy beaches one end, great for kids. Walk along towards the lighthouse and it gets much more rugged and very rocky, making it a little more difficult getting into the water. Lovely walk from main beach to the lighthouse.

The whole Atlantic coastline here really is stunning. It is possible to sit for hours watching the giant waves crash in. The sands are glorious. My only disappointment is the road along the shoreline which is in poor repair. Not an easy drive, but a fabulous location.

Flag Beach

Lovely beach, has a few cafes for cocktails, beers and food nearby. Because the area is not a massive developed resort, it is quiet and calm and there is only a few people there during the daytime. The bad side of this is that it's quiet far away from the centre of Corralejo. It can be difficult to get a taxi back and there are not a lot of food/drink amenities after sundown. I would recommend going here definately but please don't forget to bring enough food and water to last you because of how isolated it is from the main town. You can walk here but I would advise against it. I would say it is around at least 1 hour walk from the centre.

Popcorn Playa

a particular beach that has some "grains" of sand that remind us of the tasty popcorn. It is located near the town of Corralejo on the island of Fuerteventura, in the Canary Islands. In reality those white beans, are coral fragments of different sizes, which have taken on this singular shape, thanks to the erosion of natural elements.

I was concerned about the road condition reading the previous posts... I decided to walk out before we have our rental car and I bring my family. More on the road below: Excellent experience!!!! The contrast with the enormous waves crashing off the coastline and the white broken coral- popcorn beach is a must do especially with family’s Lots has been written on the tide pools and sea life for children to look at. There was a few pieces of fresh broken glass so be sure to wear shoes. But I have seen more on most sand beaches (seems to be common- fresh broken glass). Some sea glass also sparkles in the white coral pieces. No services Bring your water, a hat (no trees or shade) Can have wind - so bring a scarf, or light long sleeve shirt for comfort Sunglasses for sure as the sun makes the white coral quite bright. Definitely unsafe for swimming- but the beauty of watching the crashing waves is stunning The road: is hard packed, and there are some small washboard bumps (I am from Canada and logging roads often have very large bumps and washboards). I think the road is in terrific condition and is hard-packed; but if you are used to only driving on pavement your will feel small bumps for the short distance 3km. Road has some curves and you will need to be cautious on a few corners as there is some narrow areas- but mostly a 2 lane road all the way. I saw cars, vans, 4x4 vehicles traveling at some pretty fast speeds, along with most vehicles using some wise speed. Pull over to let the locals by as they are used to the road and want to get home/work etc. Walking tips: Be sure to bring at least 1L - 1.5L of water out you. There are NO trees or any shade on the walk or beach. Bring a hat, and if you are sensitive to dust a face cover as cars will kick up some dust. If you Walk on the ocean side as the wind predominantly is blowing from there and you will have less. There can be times when there is no wind and you will certainly feel the heat. Have sturdy runners or hikers on as there are numerous small rocks on the road. Not a lot of elevation changes but a few small hills I am short and take my time to take photos etc- took be 1.5 hrs one way from the EuroSpar to Popcorn Beach. So consider a snack if you think you will want one- there are no snack stands. Enjoy it’s a great experience to see the barren land, hear the crash of the waves hitting to coastlines, and the contrasting colours of the sea, waves, sky, and corral.
