Beautiful us an understatement!! It was an incredible beach and especially when the curious seals are popping their head to say hello so close to you.

St. Cyrus beach is also a nature reserve, as it’s home to over 70 species of birds, as well as as other flora, fauna & insects - (and there’s also the possibility of spotting ???? and seals in the water.) The stretch of golden sand is around 3 miles, backed by grassy dunes, with red granite cliffs towering in the background. You can access it from the turn off at the North Esk bridge where there is a fair sized car park, and a long wooden walkway to the beach. However, as the views are so spectacular from St. Cyrus cliff top , it’s worthwhile to take in the views from there. If you are physically able you can also use two steep cliff paths to walk down to the beach ( I personally find the northern one easier)and just take time and care to to both ascend/descend. It is well worth it (and I’m lazy!) & takes approximately 10/15 minutes. There are rock pools, rocky outcrops and sand dunes to explore, and a pretty waterfall at the northern end. The beach is also littered with characterful driftwood & flotsam & jetsam. It is a photographer’s dream - especially at dawn & sunset.

A stretch of sandy beach north of the city.
A beautiful beach with large sand dunes and amazing views of the north sea with windfarm in the distance. Ideal for a family day out or a sunset walk with a loved one.

A fabulous clean beach that would not look out of place in the Caribbean - just the temperature that gives it away ????. However, despite the chilly sea wind , there were still hardy youngsters playing in the ????, plus a good few dog-walkers out & about, ???? riders, and people up climbing the sand dunes. It was mesmerising watching the white crested rollers crashing in, and fun chasing the raucous seagulls from their gathering spots. Don’t know if it was because there was an abnormally low tide , but there were clumps of stranded jellyfish on the sand, looking for all the world like beached paperweights. I’m an avid beach-comber, but sadly only found one piece of sea-glass whilst there, and there’s not much in the way of ???? to be found either - but a sea of glorious sand! This place would be absolutely mobbed if it was somewhere more temperate.

When the weather is nice, one of the best places to visit in Aberdeen is the beach. With our four legged friends, we walk from Footdee up to the beach ballroom and back to footdee. Also, along the way we are blessed with lovely coffee shops and restaurants.

Beware, this review is written specifically on Catter line Bay Not for Sup2Summit which is a different thing altogether. And, my family did all these activities on our own. What I like about this place: -nice and quiet stroll on the beach as not many people know about it -You could drive down to the beach and park there, but the road down to the beach is narrow and not many parking spaces -There was one table and benches there, should you want to do a picnic -you could do a bit of rock climbing but be careful though _________________________________________ Note: before you go you might want to find out more information about this beach ;I wonder why the sand on the beach is black. The last time I saw a black sand beach was in Hawaii but that was due to the aftermath of volcano activity. I am not suggesting in the area there is active volcano but would be interesting for you to find out . _________________________________________ TIPS: In the Summer, if I read it right, there are outdoor activities offers by Sup2Summit , which you could find it's information from TripAdvisor too. Bring a pair of rock climbing shoes, you would appreciate it more
