Stumbled this museum by chance and was awed by the collection. The Batik paintings are personal collections by the owner over the years. Batik as most know are decorations on cloth to be used as clothing. This museum however showcase Batik as a medium for paintings. A cool place to take a break, rest and cool down and feast your eyes with the intricacies of the Batik paintings when exploring the streets of Georgetown.

Situated in an old-style Penang house with its long, narrow architecture and a central atrium, Teochew Puppet and Opera House is a museum of Teochew opera art, the first of its kind in Malaysia. The museum contains exhibits of Teochew iron-rod puppets as well as costumes and props from live-size Teochew opera, telling the story of a remarkable family of opera performers over five generations. Visitors may also try on authentic opera costumes and try their hand at manipulating the unique iron-rod puppets. Though it is primarily an exhibition space, the Teochew Puppet & Opera House still occasionally holds opera performances, talks and workshops in the premises after hours.
I so remember watching Teochew Puppets and Chinese opera in general as a child, but never kept it up. So it brought back a lot of good memories to visit this museum and seeing all the costumes and puppets. This museum is very close to the Sun Yat Sen Museum on the same street, so it’s good to combine the two visits while here.

Penang State Museum and Art Gallery Officially open in 1962, the Museum houses a fine collection of old photographs, maps, charts and other historical relics. There are also Malay daggers (keris), Chinese furniture, embroidery and paintings of old Penang. At the Penang State Museum there are also interesting sections which recounts the bloody nine days of rioting between Chinese secret societies in 1867, attributed by bewildered British authorities to a rambutan-throwing incident. Georgetown suffered a near civil war before the administrators took a firm hand. The societies were heavily fined and the proceeds used to build police stations which subsequently kept the peace. The Penang State Art Gallery on the other hand is situated at a different premise which is at Dewan Sri Pinang, Light Street, a stone thrown away from the Museum premise . There are two Art Galleries which is situated in Dewan Sri Pinang. The Art Gallery on the Ground floor displays the works of local artists and is the venue for special exhibitions meanwhile the exhibition hall at the 3rd Floor housed the Permanent Collection which comprises of paintings donated or bought from the artists.
It was interesting to walk around the museum for a few hours to see the history of the island of Penang.
