Our role is to make Gainsborough's history and heritage accessible to all. Our archives include information on companies including Marshalls and Rose Brothers, schools, buildings, local newspapers, burials and cemeteries. We have a wide variety of displays and changing exhibitions, well established research room and a small tea room with full facilities. We welcome all visitors and have a lift to provide disabled access to all floors.
My partner's sister, who teaches in Gainsborough, wanted to visit the centre, which is based in the old telephone exchange, with a view to taking a school party. We popped in on Saturday morning, and had a cheap and cheerful cuppa in the delightful little 'Exchange Tea Room' - free biscuits! - before exploring further. Staffed by charming and knowledgeable volunteers, this turned out to be an unexpected treasure trove of local history. They have three storeys of displays, artefacts and information, including a street scene. On the top floor you can see what was once a flat for the security guard, and still contains its original fireplace with cooking range. Gainsborough was once an important port, and later an equally important manufacturing centre - so the contents of this building are a fantastic resource for anyone wishing to delve into these areas of history; or to research their family history, as the archive includes the records of hundreds of people who were employed by the big companies in the past. I have no local links, but I found it a fascinating and delightful way to spend the morning, and have no doubt we will return.

What a wonderful museum. It is packed full of exhibits including, dinosaurs, natural history, Egyptian artefacts, arts and crafts, ceramics, Victorian art. My favourite was the exhibition of children’s clothes. They were so intricately made with fine needlework and stitching. Children would enjoy going through the tunnels in the wild life section. So did I!

My husband and I visited this great exhibition yesterday. If you can do the guided tour do so, it was fascinating, informative and well worth a visit to see the well presented displays, made all the more interesting because of the local connection. The Guy Gibson and the Dambusters are truly inspirational.

Derby Museums is an independent trust and organisation run for, and on behalf of, the people of Derby. We provide a museums and arts service, accessible to everyone, and are responsible for the curation of all the artefacts and works of art entrusted to us, and the buildings in which these are held. Our aim as a new organisation is to bring as many of these objects into the public domain as is practically possible and exhibit them in ways that delight and inspire. We also run education and learning programmes, and hold events and exhibitions with the purpose of sharing knowledge and inspiring creativity and making amongst the people of Derby. As well as schools and student learning, we run many events for adults and groups, as well as families. Our collections and the information we hold about them are as unique as our location and history; we are a city continually shaped and driven by creativity and innovation, located in a valley that changed the world. The services we provide are also designed to promote the city: using its rich and important past to inspire its future.
Quite a buzz, being school holidays, lovely to see children so absorbed in activities. Very up to date and interesting.

Situated on the ducal Welbeck estate, the award-winning Harley Gallery shows contemporary exhibitions by leading visual artists. Exhibitions change five times a year, and range from ceramics to photography. The Portland Collection Museum displays works of art from Welbeck’s internationally significant historic collection, which has been built up over the centuries by the Dukes of Portland and their families. There are hundreds of treasures on show including Michelangelo’s ‘Madonna del Silenzio’, Van Dyck’s portrait of the Earl of Strafford, and the pearl earring worn by King Charles I to his execution. The Portland Collection opened in 2016 and has attracted critical acclaim and a national RIBA award for architecture. These two inspiring art galleries are accompanied by an award-winning gallery shop, which specialises in contemporary craft from leading names and emerging makers, Farm Shop and an award-winning Café.
On a overcast day , we went to welbec as an undercover attraction. The gallery has two parts the first building is mostly modern , not my thing unfortunately. But wait ... you must go to the next building housing the Portland collection . WOW what a fascinating look at the wealth and history of the family collection . Most important of all , the gentleman on security , a retired local officer. Was totally fascinating in his knowledge of the history of the pieces on display , paintings, jewellery, articles, he really brings it to life with his storytelling and facts , you must visit if he’s there . Made the place for us .

Wonders of the Peak is our main, permanent exhibition at Buxton Museum & Art Gallery - with over 1,200 objects on display, covering 360 million years of history. Geology: explore a time when sharks swam across the Peak District and when giant dragonflies rules the sky! Ice Age Animals: See the massive power of the cave lion's hind leg and the deadly teeth of the scimitar-toothed cats. Archaeology: From pre-historic tools, to Roman jewellery, from Saxon silver to medieval coins - see what generations of the Peak District people have left behind. Art: Admire the beauty of Blue John and visit the largest collection of Ashford Black Marble on public display, and a changing display of art works in both our art galleries. The Boyd Dawkins Study: Home to a mermaid and more - an Edwardian study, commemoration the many people who have given objects to the museum, particularly two scientists, Sir William Boyd Dawkins and Dr J Wilfrid Jackson.
Free entry, lots of very interesting exhibits and displays, and two galleries for exhibitions. The history of the Peak District is laid out in an informative time line with a number of beautiful and appropriate objects, there are videos of (for example) the construction of a flint axe and the chance for children to dress up. Very worthwhile visit.

We walked from Fonaby with the kids to go here. It had a nice buzzy but not loud atmosphere. The choice of food was varied, well priced with very large portions. Service was slow but I believe a lot of new staff. They were friendly and resolved any issues quickly. Would definitely come here again. Popular with local road bikers. I had no idea this was here!!
