Manchester Town Hall

This place is temporarily closed. This neo-Gothic masterpiece was designed by Alfred Waterhouse and completed in 1887. At the front main entrance sits a statue of the Roman Governor, Agricola, founder of the original fort of Mamuciam, from which the city began. The building dominates Albert Square.

A magnificent building from a time when civic buildings made a statement and architecture from a time when elegance was the driving factor. This impressive building, dominates the attractive Albert Square. Unfortunately due to renovation it will be a while before the main hall is open again to the public. I am told it is not to be miseed.

What a fabulous place to spend a few hours! A garden with something for everyone - luxurious vegetables, dramatic topiary, borders, willow maze, croquet lawn...all maintained to perfection. The house (we didn't take a tour because of having my very elderly mum with us who would have struggled) is handsome and serene from the outside. Walk under hornbeam (?) pleached walkways, sit by the beautiful giant lily pond. It's lovely. The cafe is elegant and classy - National-Trust-smart architecture but without the food all being the same! Our cream teas were excellent. And a gift shop with things we really wanted to buy, well chosen. 100% is my score.

Wordsworth House and Garden

This 18th-century Georgian town house was the birthplace and childhood residence of the English poet William Wordsworth.

Reviewed By Stephen51 - Lytham St Anne's, United Kingdom

We have been promising ourselves to visit Wordsworth House for years and finally got round to it last week before it closed for the Winter. What a great place for both children and adults alike. The staff, all dressed in period costume were extremely entertaining offering samples that had been made in the kitchen to authentic Georgian recipes and entertaining the children with stories of life as a servant. The dining room is set with authentic food, once again made in the kitchen, and looks as if the residents have just finished their meal and left the room. There is also a wonderful Harpsichord in the drawing room, which was made in the 21st Century and has a beautiful sound. The gardens were also a must see although we realised that they would be much better in the Summer season. A Great place for all ages with plenty of play opportunities for children and adults alike!

Hoghton Tower is one of Lancashire’s gems – come and find out why. A Tudor – Elizabethan manor and the ancestral home of the de Hoghton family, the Tower stands proudly on its hill overlooking the surrounding countryside. Join a guided house tour and go back to the 16th century following the steps of William Shakespeare, Charles Dickens and King James I who, at a banquet held in his honour, famously knighted a loin of beef 'Sir Loin'. Stroll through the beautiful walled gardens and take in the views of Lancashire, the Lake District and North Wales. Book an afternoon tea or just call in for lunch, coffee and cake to soak up some history! Private and School tours available year-round with prior arrangement. Hoghton Tower is quite simply unique – the perfect setting for your fairy tale wedding. All income benefits the Hoghton Tower Preservation Trust.

We decided to break up the drive home by stopping here. We had booked a guided tour online the day before we visited. We were shown the house by Lorraine whose knowledge of the history of the house is good. I do feel though they could tell us more about this being the third most haunted house in england. Also a bit more of its link with lady Godiva might be worth a mention.
