A must-see for everyone, who's into history, knights, and the Middle Ages. It is Dublin's signature!
The story of Ireland is a heroic tragedy. A land of saints and scholars turns to war to defend itself against marauding Vikings and Norman mercenaries before falling to English power in 16th century. It would be 400 years of harsh oppression before an independent Ireland emerged in 1922, and even then much was left undone. One this tour you will take in this tragic tale on the streets of the Irish capital visiting sites of historical importance such as, the General Post Office, Christ Church Cathedral, St. Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin Castle, Trinity College Dublin, and the National Famine Memorial. You will also meet important figures in Ireland's development such as the Viking King Sytrigg Silkbeard, the Norman mercenary Strongbow, King Henry VIII, the Liberator Daniel O'Connell, and tragic rebel figure Michael Collins. We will finish the tour with how Ireland has developed over the last 100 years into a confident and wealthy European nation, with a pint in a historic Irish pub.

I contacted our hotel (The Alex Hotel) to book a private tour of Dublin for my wife and I. The hotel recommended Brian O'Reilly from Tours with Locals Ireland. Unfortunately, the hotel never confirmed the reservation with Brian. When I contacted Brian regarding the tour he was unavailable but arranged for a free tour the following day with his colleague, Alan Ingoldsby. Alan was a very knowledgable, personable and funny guide. He took us to Trinity College, (recommended us to book - Book of Kells Tour) , took us to numerous locations including Guiness Factory, Jameson Distillery, Phoenix Park ( US Ambassador & Irish President's residences), Kilmainham Gaol Jail, Hapenny Bridge, Dublin Castle among many other stops. Along the way Alan informed us of Irish history and recommended Pubs and restaurants that were enjoyed by the locals. The tour was a great overview that allowed us return to spots that we wanted to explore more in depth. When I return to Dublin I will definitely contact Brian O'Reilly and request Alan Ingoldsby as a tour guide.

This unique tour uses Ireland’s artistic and literary wealth to explain the historical moments, traditions, wars, movements, and eras that have sculpted Ireland through the centuries. We’ll explore the highlights of the National Gallery, National Library and National Museum, with a break half-way through. Consider those great cultural and artistic treasures that represent your country’s history. For the USA, it is paintings like ‘Washington Crossing the Delaware’ and ‘American Gothic’ by Grant Wood, original manuscripts of Edgar Allan Poe and Walt Whitman, and objects full of cultural symbolism like The Liberty Bell. This tour will show you their Irish equivalents: - Symbolic paintings representing the Norman Conquest of Ireland and the Irish Civil War; - Insight into the life and works of W.B. Yeats - Ireland’s Greatest Poet; - The Tara Brooch and the Ardagh Chalice – treasures that epitomise Ireland’s Golden Age (500-800AD).
