10 Archaeology Tours in Beijing That You Shouldn't Miss

May 22, 2021 Nobuko Falco

Welcome to a capital city whose story goes back at least 3000 years. In Beijing, you'll find a wealth of history, both ancient (the Hall of Preserving Harmony, Summer Palace, Forbidden City) and more recent (Chairman Mao Memorial Hall, Tiananmen Square). For the best market experience, choose the Dirt Market over the touristy Silk Market. A visit to the Great Wall, the longest manmade structure in the world, is absolutely essential.

Lily was a wonderful tour guide! I had been to the Terra Cotta Warriors site before, but I didn't realize how much I didn't know until Lily showed us around. She was knowledgeable, friendly, engaging and she catered to our wishes. She even suggested the perfect restaurant for lunch afterwards and introduced us to a variety of teas that we sampled (before purchasing, of course :) Lily was patient with us (there were three of us in our little group and we each went at different paces) and she was easy to spend time with. We never felt rushed. She also knew a few shortcuts, for example, taking the tram to the site, which saved us time and energy. I highly recommend Travel China Guide, their star tour guide, Lily and the expert driver!

Living in Shanghai, I spent a 6-day break in Sichuan which ended up to be a fantastic experience. This is greatly thanks to my graceful, knowledgeable and care taking guide Lisa (additionally she also has a very good command of English). I shall also give a special mention to our driver who every day drove us safely in a very modern and clean "Hong Qi" (my first time, yep!) At no point in time would I feel any COVID-related risk, the company actually provided each day two masks and hand sanitizer(s). One personal regret was that I could not go to JiuZhaiGou, the site not being opened to foreigners (I was duly informed when I made the trip reservation); Nonetheless, I did see so many beautiful and interesting spots that it is only but a further motivation to come back. The epitome was obviously the Panda base, but just to state a few amongst others, I liked in particular LeShan big Buddha, Emei shan, QingCheng shan (the birth place of Taoism) and Dujiangyan, the irrigation system which has been in use for some 1500 years! I also enjoyed the food which eventually was not as spicy as I could have feared. Hum, this was again thanks to Lisa's good care who made sure that the dishes would be adapted to my european palate! In short, this trip has been a real match, it will remain vivid in my memory. Great thanks to all who took part to its flawless organization and made it so peasant.

Sherry did a fantastic job showing us some of the best and most important sights in Beijing. She had already booked tickets in advance and was able to help navigate us through various gates and QR codes, which made the tour much smoother, and she was extremely knowledgeable, interesting, and friendly. Seeing these sights was at least twice as enjoyable because she was there to explain them and make conversation with us. I strongly recommend a tour with Sherry. We had a great time at Christmas because of her.

It's a beautiful section of the Great Wall, with little crowds. Our group was the only one on the wall section, and after the first 15 min we had all spread apart enough that it really felt like you were alone on the Great Wall. There were plenty of bathrooms along the wall (very clean actually). There are vendors setup in some towers with cold drinks to sell you. They never bothered us, and we actually really liked having an ice cold drink. This is a very hilly section of the wall, and was pretty challenging. But the nice part is that the starting point is actually really low to the ground, so you don't have to hike up this big hill to actually make it onto the wall. The hills definitely start after you're on the wall itself, but it was nice to have the access point be really easy.

Having already seen "big spots" in Beijing? Want to experience a mysterious Peking on a Beijing Private Guided Day Tour? Why not taking a Private trip to explore the Longqing gorge and Guyaju Cave - the ancient cliff dwellings which is simply 2-hour ride from Beijing downtown. Longqingxia Gorge is well known for its scenic canyon landscape. A reservoir flooded the canyon after the building of the nearby Longqing Dam. The mountain and river vistas are reminiscent of other famous landscapes in China. It is variously given the names "Little Three Gorges" for resembling a "microcosm of the Yangtze River's fabled Three Gorges". While cruising, different places offer diverse scenery. Guyaju cave - nestled in a secluded gorge, lies a rather spectacular sight of cave homes that most likely associate to bedrock - the hometown of the Flintstone. The origins of the community are mysterious due to uncertainty about the founding people and later disappearance of the community.
