Between the 1st and 4th century, Sanxay was an important centre for cures and pilgrimages placed under the protection of two divinities. Set in the verdant valley of the Vonne, the remains of the largest buildings (temples, amphitheatre, thermal baths) located throughout a 19-hectare site make the site one of the best preserved and most interesting of the monuments belonging to Gallo-Roman times. We stumbled upon the gates and ramparts at Parthenay and were really impressed at the completeness of the ramparts and the ancient village it’s a 13 century fortified village and is really beautiful it has beautiful stone bridges and a fantastic cathedral I reckon this was one of the most underrated towns we visited and definitely worth a visit on its own The bell tower still works and is centuries old It’s not fear from Nantes and has a good lot of shops ,cafe and restaurants

The antique city of “Vetus Pictavis” is located at the confluence of the Vienne and Clain rivers. It was built 2,000 years ago. The city spread over 70 hectares and was built under Emperor Augustus. South-East, a theatre with 10,000 places offers a gigantic view of the antique monuments from this period and is 116 m across.
